CULTURAL QA 02-2023-15 BEING A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 If a train stops, does the AC work onIndian Railways? A1 YashwantKumar, Learning about India, since 1990Updated 4y The AC inside the AC coaches works, even if the train is athalt. In case of ICF rake, the AC coaches the alternator and battery set attached underneath coach. When the train is under motion, thealternator generates electricity and is stored in the batteries under thecoach. This electricity is used inside the coaches for the Air-Conditioning ofthe coach. The battery set is shown in the image below. In case of the LHBrake, the coaches do not have the Under-slung alternator and battery set.Instead, these rakes have a generator car, attached to the rake. If the rake is full of AC coaches, ithas 2 generator cars. The electricity required for the Air-conditioning of therake and other purposes is generated by these generator cars. My note-In some trainsthere is no generator carand a coach is attached in it’s place and alternate arrangements are providedfrom the engine itself as I read in a news item. I stand corrected if I amwrong. Q2 How long did it take for the UnitedKingdom to recover from World War II economically? A2 IanChamberlain, Lives in Southampton United Kingdom (1996–present)Thu We were still clearingthe rubble from the bomb sites in the 1960’s in the city I was brought up in. This country finally paid of theinterest payments for lend lease in the mid 2000’s although I am not entirelysure what year exactly. Our industries, and especially our aircraft industrywas decimated by the lack of funding from the governent due to lack of money. Wehelped to make the world a safer place and without Britain there would neverhave been a liberation of Europe, but apparently we were on the winning side. Neither Germany or Russia paid backthe money they owed but it seems Americans always question if the UnitedKingdom did. Yes we did. Paid back in full, including interest. Q3 Isthere a word for "fellow-in-laws", i.e. the parents of yourson-in-law or daughter in law, in English or in other languages? A3 BhuvanaRameshwar, Know little Tamil, English and Hindi Fri Parents of my daughter in law are called as “sambandhi ” in Tamizhlanguage. I use the word sambandhi when talking about them to third persons. But otherwise I call them by their names when addressing them in conversationbut with respect. Sambandhi is made of two words Sama and Bandhi. Sama means equal and bandhi meansrelationship or bond. Usually marriages were arranged between families of equals incaste, wealth, status etc hence the word sambandhi. In Hindi sambandhi ji is used for male and Samdhan ji forfemale parent. Ji suffix is used as form of respect. My note- In laws of son anddaughter is best wordsto denote in my opinion while talking to third party. While taking I do notthink addressing by name with Mr or Mrs is very good. Q4 What should every Indian know aboutBangladesh? A4 BalajiViswanathan, follows government policies closely. Updated 8y A few years ago, I went to Dhaka by bus for a programmingcontest (ACM's ICPC regionals). Spent a few days traveling and understanding them. Here are somethings I know: Bangladesh was calledEast Pakistan until 1971.Due to the bad treatment they received from West Pakistan (current Pakistan)they revolted. India armed the rebels and fought a war with Pakistan. Pakistan army surrendered andgave birth to Bangladesh. Unlike Pakistan, there is a sizable Hindu population (over15 million) there in Bangladesh and are treated much better. I went to temples in Dhaka (that hadbeen destroyed/vandalized but recently restored) and found non-Muslims have afair bit of religious freedom. Not unexpectedly, our ancient histories are the same. We wereruled by the same set of kings since antiquity - Nandas, Mauryas, Shungas,Guptas, Harsha, Mughals and British. Until 1947, there was nothing different in the histories of India andBangladesh. Like India, they use a poem by Rabindranth Tagore as theirnational anthem.Amar Shonar Bangla. The song was written in 1905, when British partitionedBengal into East & West Bengal. Riots erupted forcing Lord Curzon to revertback. The song is about Bengali unity that transcends religion. Bangaldesh has manyterritories within West Bengal and same for India. These enclaves are a sourceof persistant problem. Unlike the newspaper stories that we often hear about Indians& Bangladeshis constantly in fight, the ground reality is a littledifferent. The educatedpopulace of Bangladesh are very respectful towards India & Indians. Bangladesh is the world'smost densely populated nation(if you ignore small city-states). Like the people of West Bengal, Bangladeshis speak Bengali(duh!). Along with West Bengal,Bangladesh shares Sunderbans - world's largest mangrove forest and the home ofBengal tiger (the real ones, not Sourav Ganguly). Apart from the issue of enclaves, India and Bangladesh havetwo main sticking issues. 1.Farakkah Barrage (adam that diverts part ofGanges water to Hoogly of Calcutta). Bangladesh accuses us of stealing theirwater. 2. Illegal immigrationin India (a big chunk ofBangladeshis have immigrated into India's northeast and West Bengal, causingwide ethnic tensions) Q5 What are Hydrogen Trains? A5 SMART Brain,Fair Solutions.21h Hydrogen trains, alsoknown as hydrail or fuel cell trains, are trains that are powered by hydrogenfuel cells. These trains use electricity generated by the chemical reaction betweenhydrogen and oxygen in fuel cells to power electric motors that drive thetrain's wheels. Unlike traditional diesel trains, which produce harmfulemissions and contribute to air pollution, hydrogen trains emit only water and steam, making them acleaner and more environmentally friendly alternative. Hydrogen trains areequipped with hydrogen storage tanks, fuel cells, and batteries. The fuel cells convert the storedhydrogen into electricity, which is used to power the train's electric motor. The batteries store any excess energy produced by the fuel cells and provideadditional power when needed, such as during acceleration or climbing hills. Hydrogen trains are currently in operation in severalcountries, including Germany, the United Kingdom, and China. They have the potential to reducegreenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector and help to addressclimate change. Q6 What would happen if we increased theresistance of a conductor without changing its length or thickness (potentialdifference)? Would the electrical current decrease or remain constant? Why? A6 GopalaKrishnan, Former Assistant General Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom(1966–2004)Just now It is not clear how the resistance is increased of aconductor without increasing the length or thickness of a conductor. The only way is to change theconductor. Depend on the material of conductor the current may increase ordecrease. I think it is a question posted, just to post a question.Sorry for my comment Q7 Should safari cars be electric toavoid disturbing the animals as best as possible? A7 Posted byYashika Sharma7h Originally answered by Onne Vegter, owner of Wild WingsSafaris, specialist safari operator 3y Interestingly, thefirst electric safari vehicles that have been tried tend to scare and disturbthe animals more than traditional petrol or diesel driven jeeps. A number of safari lodges have tried electric safari vehicles. The technology is there and even the challenges of range and power in rough 4x4driving conditions have been addressed. They run like adream. But they cause the animals to run away. We speculate that theanimals are used to the sound of safari trucks, and a vehicle that announcesits presence from a long distance away by being noisy, is not threatening towildlife. By contrast, electric safari vehicles are totally quiet and might appear to be sneaking upon the animals, like a stalking predator. Whatever the reason, electric safari vehicles appear to bemore disturbing to wild animals than traditional safari trucks with noisyengines. The animals are very relaxed around traditional safari vehicles, butare not used to quiet vehicles and seem to get very nervous when a silentvehicle approaches. Q9 What really kills you? Voltage orCurrent? A9 Brett Bergan,Building PC's for 25 years11mo Electricity is weird.People have been known to be hit by lightning with tremendous voltage andunimaginable currentand walked away dazed and confused—but alive and uninjured. This dude from Atlanta was hit by lightning doing yardwork ona Saturday afternoon. The lightning vaporized his boot laces and knocked himclean out of his shoes in a blinding puff of smoke. He doesn’t remember whathappened but when he came to, he tasted blood in his mouth and the hair on hisleg was singed off. Extremely high voltagetends to travel on the surface and thus many who are directly stuck bylightning do survive. You are almost worse offhaving lightning strike fifty feet away from you. The voltage is lower and thecurrent is more likely to travel through you and stop your heart. My note- Very informative answer. Q10 What is normal in New York City, butweird in other places?
