THE KITCHENSTAND Dear friends,
This is some nostalgic and current incidents regarding kitchen stand in my home. Hope aninteresting and humorous reading. Exaggerationis very less in this posting. Gopalakrishnan 19-2-2023 1 Kitchenstand. The necessity of kitchen stands while in rented homesduring my career was met by iron metallic stand painted and was fitted to wall. These small stands could carry light weight bottles, tins etc. For keepingvessels cleaning items a separate stand was used. They had no appearance at all. After getting transferred to Trivandrum as lecturer intraining center, and occupying crashprogram quarter in 1991, though the quarter is not of good quality, there was chimney and ceramic sink inkitchen and one wash basin in the dining area. Some prosperity in life wasshowing dawn, due to 30% teaching allowance. It did not remain for more time;it was cut down after three months of my joining training center to 15 %. I recollect the Malayalam saying, “illathuninnu purapeetu thanum, ammatthu ottu eithiyathum illa (a Nampoothiri boyStarted from father’s home, but still did not reach the mother’s home..) Kitchen stands of different sizes were appearing instainless steel by the time. Elegant stands to keep tumblers, dabaras, tiffinplates, small vessels, meals plates etc. Gave good appearance to kitchen. As by nature my wife was for the biggest onein the shop, probably she might have taken into account vessels purchasing foranother 3-4 years. 2 Fixingkitchen stand I intimated the civil construction to have 4 fixturesso that the stand could take the weight of the stand with vessels. It was donein two days by a contractor. Stand was placed in position, after cleaning anddrying the vessels were kept on it, very easy to handle and use. Withouttelling purchases of new plates, tumblers, dabaras gave more shining appearancein the shelf. 3 Other flatsalso getting stand Nature among women, on seeing our stand most in ourtower purchased similar stands, some smaller ones. My tower was exclusively of Asst.engineers(Lecturers). There was more closeness among family members. Somehow though new flats came with added bed room, mosaic flooring etc. I did not shift orasked for new one. We in the tower had become very close. The damaged floors in cement with patch workswas never felt bad or spoiling aesthetic appearance. 4. Retirement On retirement in 2004 end, the steel kitchen stand wasgiven to sister in law along with many other items. And she fitted in her kitchenin her home at Cherthala. My wife was happy on the gift. We shifted to Chennai 5. Managing withoutkitchen shelf In the rented home near by present home, again wemanaged without kitchen shelf. Consolation was in new home kitchen interior canbe done. In fact we did not open many packing. 6. New home andkitchen interior By the time interior designs were becoming common, itwas 2nd interior provision by my builder, I agreed to it. In workarea shelves were provided in kadappa for keeping cleaning items, cup boardswith top glass fitting, shelves, and drawers were made in kitchen. Bottom portion of cup boards, drawers, andslabs in the interior accommodated all vessels neatly. Cleaned items were keptin a drier basket for drying since sinks had no drier. 7. Microwaveoven. My son brought a new microwave oven from Jeddah aftercompletion of home in 2007. Using Tupper ware, ceramic vessels it was easy formy wife to warm cooked items. When my son purchased a flat, for measurement itwas taken and probably bored with it,she said daughter in law can keep it permanently. 8. Smallstainless steel stand of normal type. To keep small containers, cooker weights etc., and asmall stainless steel stand was placed in place of microwave oven… 9. Sister in law’s sons buildnew homes. Now comes the most interesting part. First son rebuilthome, kitchen was modified with interior and the stainless steel standwas fitted in the work area corridor forkeeping washed vessels for drying. Initially my wife felt it was used for keeping driedvessels, but sister in law corrected- No, it is used to dry vessels, without wastingyour gift??!! 10 Microwavecomes back with information, it has become defective. One day my daughter in law brought back the microwavein a car, telling it is defective. For years it was kept on a steel stand infirst floor. 11. Microwavegets repaired. One technician came to repair semi-automatic washingmachine in upstairs saw the still glittering microwave kept in the stand. Hesaid he will repair it. I confirmed with my wife, whether she still want it inkitchen. I was thinking she was disposing it, by giving to daughter in law. Butshe said in positive and I had to permit him to repair. He brought it repairedand demonstrated working. 12. What to dowith the stainless steel stand? It cannot be in kitchen or in the show case in diningarea where it was desired. With half mind she agreed to keep it in my room to keep my accessories like waterbottle, biscuit tin, pen stand, blood sugar tester etc. etc. I was happy tohave the stand; still many more can be crept in it. It was kept on a teapoy. Asmall percentage of the cramping is reduced. Looking at the glittering stand for three days, Icould not resist writing about Kitchen shelf. If the shelf had holes in theplates it would have somehow fitted in work area as a drier for vessels. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Thatha_Patty" group.
