Q1           How does Indian Railways decide theroute and timetables for new
trains?

A1           Prashant Tiwari,Indian RailwaysEnthusiast23h

We often thinkabout this question whenever a new train launches. Today I will
share adetailed explanation of how Indian Railways decides the route and
timetable ofa new train.

The Indian Railwaysfollows a comprehensive process to decide the route and
timetables for newtrains. The following steps are involved in this process:

1. Traffic Survey: The first step in deciding the routeand timetable for a new
train is conducting a traffic survey. During thissurvey, Indian Railways
analyzes the demand for a new train and its feasibilityin terms of passenger
and freight traffic. The survey also takes into accountthe competition from
other modes of transportation.

2. Feasibility Study: Based on the data collectedduring the traffic survey,
Indian Railways carries out a feasibility study todetermine the viability of
the proposed train. This study includes an analysisof the infrastructure
required for the train, the availability of resourcessuch as locomotives and
coaches, and the potential revenue that the train couldgenerate.

3. Route Planning: Once the feasibility study iscomplete, Indian Railways
decides on the route for the new train. This involvesselecting the origin and
destination stations, as well as the intermediatestations that the train will
stop at. The route is chosen based on the demandfor the train, the availability
of infrastructure, and the competition fromother modes of transportation.

4. Timetable Planning: After the route has beenfinalized, Indian Railways
prepares a timetable for the new train. Thetimetable includes the departure and
arrival times for each station along the route,as well as the duration of the
journey. The timetable is designed to ensurethat the train operates efficiently
and maximizes passenger and freighttraffic.

5. Approval Process: Once the route and timetablehave been finalized, the
proposal for the new train is submitted for approval. The proposal is reviewed
by various departments within Indian Railways, such asthe Commercial, Traffic,
and Mechanical departments, before it is approved.

6. Implementation: After the proposal has beenapproved, Indian Railways
proceeds with the implementation of the new train. This involves arranging for
the necessary resources such as locomotives andcoaches, as well as coordinating
with other departments to ensure that thetrain operates smoothly.

Overall, theprocess of deciding the route and timetables for new trains in
Indian Railwaysis a detailed and comprehensive process that involves multiple
steps anddepartments. The aim is to ensure that the train is viable, efficient,
andmeets the needs of the passengers and the organization.

My note-Often complaints from states like Kerala are, state request is mostly
ignored.

Q2           Why was the Eiffel Tower built?

A2           Inshal, Writer and Quora Contributor Mar26

The Eiffel Tower isone of the most iconic structures in the world, instantly
recognizable andbeloved by people from all corners of the globe. But have you
ever wondered whythis magnificent tower was built in the first place?

The Eiffel Towerwas the brainchild of Gustave Eiffel, a French civil engineer
who had gained areputation for designing and constructing some of the most
impressivestructures of his time. Inthe late 19th century, France was preparing
to host the 1889 World's Fair, amajor international event that would showcase
the latest achievements inscience, technology, and arts.

Eiffel saw this as an opportunity to create something trulyspectacular,
something that would capture the imaginationof the world and leave a lasting
legacy for generations to come. He came upwith the idea of building a tower
taller than any structure ever built before,a tower that would become a symbol
of France's engineering prowess and itscommitment to progress.

Eiffel and his team of engineers worked tirelessly fortwo years to design and
build the tower, usingadvanced engineering techniques and advanced materials
for their time. Whencompleted in 1889, the tower stood at a staggering 324
meters tall, making itthe tallest structure in the world (at the time).

The cost of building the tower was also noteworthy, withthe project costing
over 7 million French francs,a staggering sum at the time. Eiffel funded much
of the project, and the Frenchgovernment provided some additional funding.

The Eiffel Tower was an instant sensation, attractingmillions of visitors from
all over the world to theWorld's Fair and becoming a beloved symbol of Paris
and France itself. Over the years, it has been used for various purposes, from
scientificexperiments to radio and television broadcasts. It continues to be
oneof the most popular tourist attractions in the world.

Q3           Do buffet restaurants sometimes havea sign that says “eat all you
want”, but the employees tell you not to takemore than one plate? If so, why?

A3           Bethann Siviter,Nurse- ASC1,disabled, AD handler, author, Native
AmericanMar 18

Because the signssay “EAT all you want” not “TAKE all you want”.

They know that whenoffered a wide range of yumminess, people’s eyes get bigger
than their stomachs and theytake more than they will ever eat, and the
restaurant throws away a lot offood, likely things someone else could have
eaten.

I was at a buffetand heard a woman tell the staff to take her plate full of
food away, the ladasked if there was something wrong, she said “Yes, it’s
gotten cold while I waseating my salad…”. I noticed her plate had a bunch of
Crab Claws… I would haveloved to have them, but they’d run out.

So, the reason for the “take only one plate” thing isbecause people can be
selfish, and the restaurant is trying to protect theirfood, their other
customers, and the world from people who take things and don’t eatthem.
Remember your mom saying “Eat your carrots, people somewhere else arestarving,
so don’t you waste that food!” well, mom (like always) was right.

There was a buffetwe used to go to in Maine- the sign said “All you can eat $5.
Edible food left on your plate willbe charged at $6 a pound”. They had a big
food scale and take awayboxes - if you left plates with food to be disposed of,
it got put in a boxwaiting for you to ask for your check. I think it was 50% of
charges from the“take home” initiative went to local charities serving the poor
and to the soupkitchen in the big city nearby. Some people did it on purpose to
get a doggiebag but seeing tourists who’d never been there before get told
“That’s 22 forthe buffet and drinks, and 18 for the leftovers” was priceless.

Oh, and since youpaid for the food, you were expected to bring it home. In
Maine, and probablyin other places, business had to pay for their trash and
food waste to becollected.

Q4           Does electricity get saved by notusing it?

A4           Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

Theelectric power generated and distributed cannot be saved.Depending on load
statistics power is generated. This generation is optional inhydro electric,
steam, diesel, atomic etc.

There isadhoc generation which is slightly lesser than the actual
requirement.Hence power generation loss is not there. There is only
insufficiency.

As far asconsumers are concerned using less current reduce the power
consumption bill. However switchingOFF lights, fans does not reduce power bill
much. Air condition, heater, motor etc are current consuming.

Just because 20 or30 homes switch off most lights and fans when not much
required, either theelectricity board can reduce generation of power or
consumers get considerablereduction in power bill. Thisis written in the
context of most homes use LED bulbs and tubes and less powerconsuming fans.

Q5           Why do some people curse abouteverything? The English language has
enough words to perfectly describe allthings appropriately.

A5           Claire Jordan, Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper Mar 25

Swearwords are the human equivalent of a dog growling ora cat hissing - they
express emotions, and as such can add emphasis to asentence. They are also very
versatile - for examplehere in Scotland you can happily say “Fuckit, this
fucking fucker’s fuckingfucked again” and provided the person you’re talking to
knows what “this” isbeing referred to they’ll understand the rest of the
sentence completely, whilealso understanding your feelings about it much more
vividly than if you’d said“How unfortunate: thiselectrical implement has ceased
to work again”.

Interestingly, swearwords also seem to be stored differently from other
language. **People with neurologicaldisorders which prevent them from speaking
can sometimes still sing - or swear.

My note- **The last line is very important with respectto many

Q6           Can you put a junction boxunderground electrical wire?

A6           Kev Go, Training Electricians(2012–present) Upvoted by Jay
Robertson, Electrical engineer for 40 years.1y

Yes, but that should be avoided if possible. The junction will need to be a
specially designed for underground junctions andfilled with an insulating resin
that fills all the spaces inside and betweenthe cable joins. This will not
likely to be a cheap nor simple exercise.

My note- Some pumping motors are  provided underneath. For them Junction box
isunderneath soil.

In modern  telecom installations, many times junction boxes are underneath
falsebottom, and for cleaning etc, lights are provided under false
bottom.Cleaning under false bottom is a tough job which requires skill mostly
slowsucking vacuum cleaners etc. are used to clean dust accumulating,
withoutaffecting switching cables underneath.

Q7           What are the benefits of installingan exhaust fan on the inside or
outside of the wall (where there's no window)?

A7           Gopala Krishnan.Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

If chimney is not there, exhaust fan will do a lot inreducing suffocation and
cough  while fryingchilli added items.

In toilets anexhaust fan will remove bad odours. Normally fixed inside, hole in
the wallwhere fan blades will move.

Q8           What is the effect of a low voltagehigh current on a conductor?

A8           David C. Moyer,Former Plant Engineer,Maintenance, Environment
Compliance Sun

Voltage has little effect on a conductor unless it is highenough to greatly
exceed the design voltage of the insulation.“Low voltage” probably makes that
irrelevant. Current, on theother hand, makes all the difference. Conductors are
rated for a certain amountof current. Significantly above the rated current
capacity, even if the voltageis WAY below the insulation’s rating, will result
first in overheating andthen, it could result in melting of the conductor, or
certainly charringthe insulation. Hopefully, all of your conductors are
protected by currentlimiting devices such as fuses and circuit breakers.

Q9           Why do some people lock the doorsfrom inside in train coach? I
have found it difficult to board the trainbecause of it.

A9           Prashant Tiwari, Indian RailwaysEnthusiast Sat

Actually, this is a two-way problem. Solving one willimpact the other.

As we all havenoticed, the on boardrailway protection force, ticket checking
staff, and other staff always closethe door at night. If you have opened it,
they will ask you to close it.

This is done toprevent unauthorised people or thieves from entering the coach,
but thissolution brings another problem: passengers struggling to board the
train dueto closed doors.

Now what happens isthat the staff closes the door and goes to sleep, so there
is no one to openthe door whenever the train stops at any station. In AC
coaches, there are attendants who can openthe door, but in sleeper coaches, it
is problematic!

What is thesolution?

Its solution isautomatic doors, and the railways is already working on it. They
have beeninstalled in some premium trains, and someday we might see automatic
doors in normal mail andexpress trains as well.

What shall we do in such situation?

For now, if youface such a situation, tryto check nearby coaches first and
check whether any window near the gate isopen or not. If yes, you can ask those
passengers to open the door for you.

If nothing works, run towards the AC coaches, and from there you can walk
through the AC coachesto reach your berth.

My note- ACcoaches have shutters in the vestibule are and cannot reach one’s
coach.

The TTE is paidTA even while on duty to keep awake  andopen the door in
reservation coaches when it stops in a station. But a true fact is 90% TTE
afterchecking tickets is not seen. Only 90%. 10% are very sincere and dotheir
duty perfectly.

Q10         What happened to HIV? It's not abugbear anymore where I live.

A10         Steven Haddock, Studied at YorkUniversity (Canada)Wed

Back in the 1980s, if you got an HIV diagnosis, youraverage lifespan was about
3 years.

Today, if you get an HIV diagnosis, you’re likely to livethree fewer years that
a person with a similar health profile. That’s anamazing achievement.

“Magic” Johnson, one of the first really famous people to reveal his
HIVdiagnosis is going to turn 64 this year and has been living with the
diseasefor 31 years now.

Moreover, withmodern treatments, if your virus load is “zero”, it’s clear you
can’t transmitthe disease to anyone, which is one of the most misunderstood
parts of thedisease right now.

That being said,if you live in a less developed part of the world, HIV and AIDS
are still amajor problem. Treatmentfor the disease is still on the expensive
side, and in many places its common among prostitutes and there’sa stigma about
using preventative measures. All that being said, itappears that about 5% of
humans are immune to the virus as their T-Cells, whichis the immune system cell
the disease attacks, are naturally immune to it.They’re also immune to the
plague, which attacks the same cells.
