CULTURAL QA 05-2023-03 BY G and edited by KR IRS 3 5 23

Q1 What is dry cleaning and how does it differ from regular
washing?

KR: Both answered up to a level and plain. Dry cleaning
<https://www.thespruce.com/wash-or-dry-clean-clothes-2145940> is typically
used on clothes and fabrics that cannot withstand the rigors of a standard
home washer and dryer. A dry cleaning solvent cleans the surface of
materials but does not penetrate the fiber like water does in a washing
machine. It also prevents stretching and shrinking
<https://www.thespruce.com/why-clothes-shrink-in-the-laundry-2146152>. Dry
cleaning has been around since Roman times when ammonia was used to clean
woollen togas to prevent any shrinking that happens when wool is exposed to
hot water. (Yes, for wool like in) European cold countries, where drying is
tough and clothes are needed every day. By the 1930s cleaners began using
perchloroethylene, commonly called "perc." This chlorinated solvent
is highly effective and still used by many commercial cleaners
<https://www.thespruce.com/dry-cleaning-fluid-overview-1900696> today. Perc
has a distinctive chemical odour, and is classified as carcinogenic to
humans.

If you want to bypass traditional dry cleaning chemicals,
look for a green dry cleaner
<https://www.thespruce.com/what-is-green-dry-cleaning-2145936> who can
offer you one of the following services, but make sure you feel comfortable
with any of these processes:

   - *Wet cleaning: *Water, special detergents, and high-tech washers and
dryers remove stains and clean your garments, but it may not be appropriate
   for all fabrics.
   - *Liquid carbon dioxide cleaning: *Liquid and gas forms of carbon
dioxide are used as non-toxic solvents in complex (and costly) cleaning
machines that apply pressure to draw the carbon dioxide through fabrics to
remove soil. There is no heat involved which also makes the process more
   gentle to fabrics.
   - *Silicon-based solvent*: This solvent, also known as siloxane, is a
chemical-free type of liquified sand that removes stains from fabrics.
However, the manufacturing of the product may not be so green because it
   involves chlorine.
   - *DF-2000 hydrocarbon solvent: *Though this method is touted as organic
because the solvent is extracted from the earth, it is a petroleum-based
product and may not be as green as you'd prefer.

For our climate and types of clothes, drycleaning is not required, hence
many shops are closed and hotel for residents do it by steaming.

Q2 What are some mind-blowing facts about world?

G Toothpaste originated from Ancient Egypt.

KR: Ancient toothpaste was made from varying ingredients, such
as powdered eggshells, ashes from ox hooves, and pumice. Ancient Greek and
Roman types of toothpaste were highly abrasive, made of crushed bones and
oyster shells.

G Ancient Greece hosted the first-ever Olympics in 776 BCE.

KR The first known Olympics were held in the summer of 776 B.C. at
Olympia, a site in southern Greece where people went to worship their gods.
In fact, the Olympics were created in honour of ancient Greece's most
famous god: Zeus, king of the gods. Hence though Marathon of 25 miles was
done by a messenger in 490 BCE, this sport was not included in the said 776
BCE plays; it was festival sports as Indra vizha in TN. The Olympic
officially started only since AD1896.

G The heaviest building in the world is in Romania.

KR The Palace of the Parliament is the heaviest building in the
world, weighing about 4,098,500,000 kilograms (9.04 billion pounds;
4.10 million tonnes), also being the second largest administrative building
in the world.

G Q8 What is the function of fingerprints?

KR: The real facts not told here is 1 But people with a rare disease
known as adermatoglyphia do not have fingerprints from birth. Affecting
only four known extended families worldwide, the condition is also called
immigration-delay disease, since a lack of fingerprints makes it difficult
for people to cross international borders. 2 dentical twins do not have
identical fingerprints, even though their identical genes give them very
similar patterns. 1 The fetus begins developing fingerprint patterns in
the early weeks of pregnancy. Small differences in the womb environment
conspire to give each twin different, but similar, fingerprints

Q9 KR Broccoli, spinach, carrots and potatoes are all high in
antioxidants, and so are artichokes, cabbage, asparagus, avocados,
beetroot, radish, lettuce, sweet potatoes, squash, pumpkin, collard greens
and kale.
