CULTURAL QA 07-2023-27A

Q1         Why do commercial propeller aircraft nolonger exist? Aren’t they
more efficient? Could an engine’s manufacturerproduce propeller engines faster
than a jet engine?

A1          Vishnu Ravi,Studied Aerospace andAeronautical Engineering
(Graduated 2015)Jun 2

Hey there! So,guess what? Commercial propeller aircraft still exist, but
timeshave changed, and let me tell you why.

Propeller-driven planes, my pal, they're all about fuelefficiency. Especially
at lower altitudes and speeds, theybeat those fancy jets in that department.
Oh, and they can handle shorter runways like a boss! Thatmakes them perfect for
regional airports and those hard-to-reach places. Andhere's the cherry on top:
propeller aircraft won't break the bank when it comesto buying and maintaining
them. Money talks, right?

But hey, let's not forget the downside.Propeller planes bless their hearts,
they're not as fast as jets. Andyou know how people are these days, always in a
rush! So, the speed factorisn't exactly winning them any popularity contests.
Oh, and the noise, my friend.Propeller aircraft can be a bit louder than those
sleek jets, and that's not exactly musicto the ears of folks living near
airports. I mean, who wants all thatnoise disturbing their peace, right?

Now, here's the real kicker. Propeller aircraft, asmuch as we love 'em, can be
abit high-maintenance. They need more frequent TLC compared to jets. Thatmeans
more downtime for maintenance, and airlines ain't too thrilled aboutthat. They
want their planes up in the sky, making money!

So, with all these disadvantages piling up, it's no wonderpropeller aircraft
have fallen out of favor. You see,jet engines have come a long way, my friend.
They've gotten more fuel-efficientand reliable over time, stealing the show.
And let's not forget the technicalchallenges propeller engines face when it
comes to weight distribution andforeign object damage. It's like trying to fit
a square peg into a round hole!

But wait, there's hope on the horizon! Lately, there's beenthis buzz about
developing propeller engines that are not only efficient butalso friendly to
the environment. Sounds cool, right? But let's be real, we're not sure if these
engines can compete with theperformance and reliability of good ol' jet
engines. Only time will tell.

So, there you haveit, my friend. Propelleraircraft, they're still hanging on,
but the jet revolution has taken thespotlight.

It's like the tortoise and the hare, you know? The tortoise might have its
strengths, but the hare is the onestealing the show. Will the tortoise catch
up? Well, that's a story yet to betold.

Q2         How can we prevent sewage odor in ahome with septic tank and drain
field?

A2          Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

The smell appearsunder three conditions in the wash rooms and premises

Tank is almostfull. 2. There are blocking in the pipe line. 3. The exhaust is
blocked orcover damaged.

First flush alltoilets with pressure for a few times.

Check areas nearseptic tank for wetness and foul smell

If cover is damagedchange the exhaust pipe cover.

Still if smelloccur call septic tank cleaners.

Q3         When a plane is getting ready for takeoff and is going to the
runway, what powers the wheels? Is it the jet engines,or do the wheels have
their own motor? Can a plane drive backwards?

A3          Jagrata Banerjee,Studied Aviation Updated2y

Thanks for thequestion.

I will answer allyour questions one by one. The answer might be bit long, but
read it thoroughlyto understand.

Q.) When a plane isgetting ready for take off and is going to the runway, what
powers the wheels? Is it the jet engines, or do the wheels have their own motor?

First of all, the airplane is pushed back from the gateby the push-back truck,
using a tow bar.

The airplane isthen lined up on the taxiway by the push back truck.

After then, the pilots receive start up clearance andstart the engines
one-by-one.

The pilots then advances the thrust levers to approximately30–40 % of thrust.
This overcomes the friction fromthe wheels and, the aircraft starts moving
under its own engine power. After the aircraft has startedmoving, it won't need
that much thrust. The thrust is then again reducedback to near idle; and the
figure is somewhere around idle and 20%.

So, the jet engines produce the thrust to move theairplane and the wheels just
roll due to the aircraft’s movement. The wheels don’t have their own motors.

The only thing that is connected to the wheels is theTiller. It is a device in
the cockpit which is used to turn the airplane on theground.

Q.) Can an airplane be driven backwards??

Yes, an airplanecan be driven backwards. It can be done by using two methods:

1.) Push back Tractor: As I have told already, thepush back tractor is used to
push the airplane back from the gate. It is mostcommon in all airports.

2.) Using Reverse Thrust: You will see this system, hardly in any of the
airports. Its very rare to see. It is used when the pushback tractor is
unavailable or is out of service for that time.

Reverse thrust is a method which is used to slowdown the airplane on the
runway, after landing. When the thrust levers arepulled to “Reverse Thrust’
detent, the normal airflow from the engine isblocked and is directed forward to
produce braking effect.

This methodology can be used drive the airplane backwards.

But this method is avoided due to the disadvantagesassociated with it. Some of
the disadvantages are:

High Fuelconsumption   Cost Inefficient    Very Noisy    Possible damages to
the engine itself    Dangers to Ground personnel and equipment.    Increased
usage of Thrust Reversers.    More maintenance cost for airlines.

Q4         Would the same iceberg that sank Titanicstill exist today?

A4          Erika Fernandez,Loves Boating Jul 12

The fate of theiceberg after the collision is not well documented, but there
are some cluesand possibilities.

The iceberg was photographed by two ships that passed bythe site of the
shipwreck shortly after the disaster:the SS Prinz Adalbert on April 15 and the
Minia on April 26, 1912. Both photos showed a largeiceberg with a streak of red
paint along its base, indicating a recent impactwith a ship.

The iceberg also appeared to have some damage and cracks onits surface,
suggesting it had broken apart or melted partially.

It is veryunlikely that the iceberg that sank the Titanic still exists today.

According tosome estimates, an iceberg of that size would have dissolved
completely withina two to three week period.

Even if itsomehow survived longer, it would have been reduced to a much smaller
andunrecognizable fragment by now.

The longestrecorded lifespan of an iceberg is about six years, which was
achieved by an iceberg named B-15 that broke off from Antarctica in2000 and
drifted around until 2006. But, B-15 was much larger than theTitanic’s iceberg
(about 183 miles long and 23 miles wide), and it traveled inmuch colder waters
than the North Atlantic.

Q5         What is the science behind adrenalinemaking us stronger when we are
fighting or running away from somethingdangerous?

A5          Robert Clouse,Disabled Veteran atCincinnati, Ohio, USA
(2000–present)Sun

The human bodyalways has a system that acts like regulator, making it operating
at less thanit's full power. It normallyuses pain to limit the human body's
full power. Professional athleteshave trained to operate at above the normal
level of that regulator system, able to operate still with pain. Adrenaline
basically almost completelyshuts down that regulator system and disables the
pain system as well.

Adrenaline hasallowed combatants to continue fighting when they are already
fatally injured. Adrenaline is also why many injured people in combat don't
even know ituntil long after the battle is over after they come off the
adrenaline.

Evolution createdand carried on the adrenaline system to improve the chances to
survive. There isn't any animal on Earth that doesn't have the adrenaline
systemas far as I know.

Q6         Why doesn't the Moon rotate on its ownaxis like the Earth does?

A6          Abhay Dhupar, Read and make contentson outer space Wed

Dear questioner,

You are partly correct in your understanding. The Moondoes rotate on its own
axis, but its rotation is synchronous with its orbitalperiod around the Earth.
This phenomenon is known as tidal locking.

Tidal locking happens when the gravitational forces betweentwo celestial bodies
cause one body to always face the other. In the case of the Moon, as it orbits
the Earth, the gravitational forcescreate bulges on its surface, causing a
slight deformation. Over time, these forces have sloweddown the Moon's rotation
until it matches its orbital period. As aresult, we always see the same side of
the Moon from Earth.

So, the Moon does rotate, but it rotates at the same rateas it orbits the
Earth, making it appear as though it doesn't rotate at allfrom our vantage
point on Earth.
