Q5 Can stethoscope all the diagnosis of ayurveda by nadi or pulse
vibrations?

According to Ayurveda, there are 3 doshas or three internal states of a
body namely Vata (air+ether), Pitta (Fire+ water) and Kapha (Earth+
water). Any imbalance of these elements in the body leads to several
disorders. Imbalance of Vata elements can cause up to 80 disorders in the
human body, similarly imbalance of Pitta element can cause up to 40
disorders and Kapha element can cause up to 20 disorders in the human body.
Thus, it is being stated in Ayurveda that the diet plan of an individual
should be made in consideration to the body type in sync with these
elements. For example, a person suffering from hyper-acidity is due to the
imbalance or excess of Pitta in the body. Therefore, he/she should take
alkaline food in his diet which neutralizes the acidity and balances the
Pitta element of the body. These elements can also be disturbed with age.

Pulse diagnosis helps in determining the problems or disorders caused due
to the imbalance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

The origin point of Nadi is called as Kandasthana which is the nabi (navel
area) of the human body as navel is the central power of the body. A baby
in the mother’s womb also gets nourishment from the umbilical cord which is
also connected to navel of the baby. Our body consists of 72,000 Nadis (or
channels). The 72,000 nadis spring from three basic nadis – the left, the
right and the central – the Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna.

The word “nadi” does not mean nerve. Nadis are pathways or channels of
prana in the system. These 72,000 nadis don’t have a physical
manifestation. There are 72,000 different ways in which the energy or prana
moves. If the pranic energy is moving through left nasal passage i.e.
through Ida Nadithen the body will be more suitable for performing subtle
exercises like yoga, similarly, if the pranic energy is moving through
right nasal passage i.e. through Pingala Nadi then the body will be
suitable for performing energetic exercises and if the pranic energy is
flowing through middle passage i.e. through Sushumna Nadi then it is
suitable for spiritual exercises. All these three nadis are connected to
the spinal cord of the body.

Spinal disorders are caused due to the irregular body alignment and it may
cause hinderance to the functioning of other organs of the body as most of
them are connected to the spinal cord. Nadi Vigyan offers techniques that
instantly cures patients from lower back pain and various other back
problems.

In Ayurvedic pulse reading, the index finger corresponds to vata, middle
finger to pitta, and ring finger to kapha. Whichever finger feels the pulse
strongest determines your prakruti dosha. The vikruti dosh is determined by
which finger received the strongest kickback when pressed down on the
artery.

Pulse diagnosis or Nadi Pareeksha is done using the signals obtained
from the three precise locations on the wrist at the radial artery using
the index, middle and ring fingers corresponding to Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
The signals obtained from these locations are not only due to the
contraction and relaxation of blood vessels but also a result of movement
of blood through the artery. The Nadi Vaidyas use their experience and
skill for accurate pulse reading. Any change in the nature of signal felt
is a means of diagnosis of disease. The different waveforms obtained from
vata, pitta, and kapha nadi have a shape similar to that of movement of a
snake, frog, and swan.

The term Nadi refers to the pulse, nerves, veins, arteries, and some
sort of channel passage of physiological and biological signals. It is a
comprehensive method, which helps to reach the root cause of health issues,
not merely by addressing the symptoms. Nadi Pareeksha or the pulse
diagnosis forewarns you about potential health risks. It gives you an
insight on how to optimize your health in accordance with the elements
which are predominant in your body. It provides you with a personalized and
individual prognosis which is detailed and accurate. Several chronic
diseases like diabetes, infertility, obesity, hypertension, paralysis,
mental disorders, severe joint pains and skin diseases can be detected by
using this Nadi pareeksha.

When there is a dosha imbalance in the body, a pulse can identify it.
For instance, a frog may be felt under index where actually a snake should
be felt. This is an indication of ‘frog chasing the cobra’ or in simple
terms, pitta blocking the Vata dosha. This way doctors can make an accurate
analysis of dosha imbalance and upcoming diseases based on pulse analysis.

Nadi felt at the wrist region signifies the life of the patient
and helps to diagnose the diseases. Always in male right hand Nadi felt and
left in the female. For analysis of Nadi we have to focus on the following
character Gati (movement), Vega (rate), Tala (rhythm), Bala (force), Akruti
(tension & volume), Tapamana (temperature), Kathinya (consistency of vessel
wall) of pulse.

Nadi is also used for prognosis as well. In many Ayurvedic texts it
is described. Pulse and the Time of Death can be predicted by pulse.

1 Not the usual place felt at a distance of two fingers proximal to its
normal site. Death within one & half hour.

2 Pulse 2½ finger proximal to its normal site cold, fast. Death within
3 hours.

3 Pulse is felt at a point 3 finger‘s proximal to the wrist joint. Death
after 3 hours.

4 Pulse not felt at the usual place and the middle finger gets thread
like impulse. Death within four and half hours.

5 Pulse is hardly palpable by any of 3 palpating fingers. Death within
six hours.

6 Pulse is thready tortous and felt only by middle finger. Death with 15
hours.

7 Very weak, hardly felt. Death after 15 hours.

8 Hardly felt 11/4 proximal to a normal site. Death within 18 hours.

9 Felt 2 fingers proximal to its normal site and tortuous. Death
within 21 hours.

10 Felt one finger proximal to its normal site. Became slower. Difficult
to find & feel. Vibration of pulse felt by index finger resembles
Damaru. Death within 24 hours.

11 Cold pulse is felt one finger proximal to its normal site. Death
within 27 hours.

12 Slightly warm pulse, felt a quarter finger proximal to its normal
site. Death within 33 hours.

13 Pulse becoming slowly cooler. Quarter finger proximal to its normal
site. Sometimes well felt, sometimes felt, sometimes not felt. Death
within 36 hours.

14 Cold pulse is felt half a finger proximal to its normal site. Death
within 39 hours.

15 Half a finger proximal to its normal site. Death within 45 hours.

16 Felt a quarter finger proximal top its normal site. Fast irregular,
stop for while sudden stop and not felt but reappear. Death within 48
hours.

17 Felt half java proximal to its normal site, thready slow, not felt in
index, cold in middle very weak in ring. Death within 3 days.

18 Pulse is hot & fast. Very thin & weak pulse felt in index finger.
Death within 4 days.

19 Pulse becomes gradually slow & weak. Death within 5 days.

20 Sometimes fast & sometimes slow. Death within 5-7 days.

21 Pulse is hot & fast. Death within 15 days.

22 Pulse resembles a serpent or earthworm and is very weak. Death
within a month.

Ashatasthana Pariksha is an important tool to assess Rog and Rogi
Bala. On the basis of the above study we can say that Nadi Pariksha is an
important tool of diagnosis of disease in the early stage as well as it
also gives predictions about disease prognosis. KR IRS 12 8 23
