CULTURAL QA 08-2023-12A

Q1         What are some of the pros and cons ofhaving a sink in your kitchen?

A1          Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)7mo

I am writing thisanswer from Chennai, India. Some sort of sink was used in
middle class familiesfor decades. When I was about ten years R C C slab was
provided in kitchen andoven using wooden logs was fitted on it.

My mother desired some sort of sink for keeping usedvessels and a raised square
portion was made with bricks on the slab.It was the first sink known to me.
Vessels used were kept in it for next daycleaning, taking it outside the
kitchen. Many homes in later period provided tap and waste line fromit.

Regular sink wasnot available in many homes even in 1980’s. Sinks in ceramic
were available from 1990’s in my officialquarters. Now in my new home stainless
steel sinks are provided. Onein kitchen and another in work area.

The benefit is used vessels can be kept and keep kitchen somewhat neat. At
leisure time they can be cleaned. At nightit can be cleaned. If vessels are
transferred to work area, kitchen can be keptclean, delicate vessels if
necessary kept in kitchen sink.

>From the outlet letinto public system/ soak pit, if not periodically cleaned
>and refreshers usedcan give foul smell. Small creatures can get in to sink.

Now stainless steelnet cup is available to fit in to sink outlet replacing old
cover. Thisprevents all small creatures getting in .

However periodicalcleaning of outlet with cleaning items and application of
room freshner is amust.

Pouring  diluted  phynoil in the night in sinks will remove anysmell than any
other cleaning items.

Q2         How hard is it to relocate a kitchensink?

A2          Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004) Just now

I am answering fromChennai. In these areas R C C slab is laid for kitchen and
work area tables. For sink the R C C is sized insuch a manner that proposed
sink will fit in that area. Over itgranite is laid and for sink area, granite
is cutaccordingly after placing the sink.

For relocating, the sink can be removed without muchdifficulty. But in the new
area, granite and RCC has to becut with proper saw and fitted.

But areawhere sink is removed is a weak area. If R C C slab ismade and fitted
over it perfectly and new granite is added, still externally it may
lookperfect, it is a weak point.

With R C C andgranite cutting saws become common with contractors, job is not
difficult. Howeverexpenses will be more.

Q3         What is the most abundant preciousmetal?

A3          Erika Fernandez, Knows aboutChemistry17h

A preciousmetal is a rare, naturally occurring metallic chemical element that
has a higheconomic value. Precious metals are usually less reactive thanmost
elements, and they have a high lustre and ductility. Precious metals are often
usedas currency, investment, or industrial raw materials.

There are many precious metals in the world, such asgold, silver, platinum,
palladium, rhodium, iridium, osmium, ruthenium, andmore. However, not all of
them are equally abundant or accessible. The abundance of a precious
metaldepends on its occurrence in the Earth’s crust, its extraction from oresor
minerals, and its supply and demand in the market.

Silver has an average concentration of 0.075 ppm in theEarth’s crust, which
means that one ton of crust contains about 0.075 grams ofsilver.

Silver ismostly produced as a by-product of copper, lead, zinc, or gold mining.

Silver has alower demand and a lower price than gold, but it also has more
industrial uses.

So based on thesenumbers, it seems that silver is the most abundant
preciousmetal in the Earth’s crust. However, these numbers may vary depending on
the source and method ofmeasurement. Also, the abundance of precious metal in
the crust does notnecessarily reflect its availability or accessibility in the
market. The supplyand demand of precious metals may also affect their price and
value.

Q4         Is it bad to use all the water in atank?

A4          Aliya,Teacher at Noble Grammar School(2014–present)1h

Using all the water in a tank is not necessarily bad, butit depends on the
context and purpose of the tank.

If the tank is meant for storing water foressential needs such as drinking,
cooking, or hygiene, then using up all thewater could lead to inconvenience or
even potential health risks if there is noimmediate access to a water source.

However, if thetank is used for non-essential purposes such as irrigation,
swimming, orindustrial processes, then using up all the water may not have
significantconsequences, as long as there is a plan for refilling
orreplenishing the tank.

In general, it isimportant to consider the purpose of the tank, the
availability of watersources, and the potential impact of using up all the
water before doing so.

My note- Normally in water tanks outlet pipe is fittedabout 3 inches above the
bottom. This enables sedimentssettle in bottom  is not let out throughthe
outlet pipe. However while fully emptying some sediments may come finally.

It is advised not to take out water fully from tank.

Q5         How does a stethoscope enhance adoctor's ability to diagnose medical
conditions?

A5          Tiny Nair, Cardiologist at PRSHospital, Trivandrum May 30

As a kid I used tobe fascinated by the doctor-uncle’s stethoscope when my mom
would go for acheck-up. My mom wouldsit on the side-stool, he would place the
stethoscope over her back for 5seconds and write a prescription; to me it
looked like pure magic.

2 decadeslater, as I became a doctor myself, I could understand the futility of
such anexercise, the doctor would have heard nothing worthwhile to make a
diagnosis.

Human ear can hear from 20 – 20,000 Hz. Heart sounds standstart at around 20
Hz. By 50 years age,the lower hearing limit moves up to 50 hz.

So, to tunein to the heart sounds, you need to auscultate with full
concentration andspend sufficient time to make sense of it.

Still useful

Because he was inbed 3, it looked rude to go from 2 to 4, and so I said hello
to him. He was a young man, came in withchest pain. ECGs, Echo normal. Blood
tests includingtroponin ruled out heart attack and a negative D-dimer excluded
pulmonaryembolism. He waswaiting to go home on a prescription of pain-killers
and antacids.

As I auscultatedwith my stethoscope, I could hear a distinct rubbing sound, the
pericardialrub, something that indicates inflammation of pericardium, the
covering of theheart. It ispericarditis, I announce.

He stays back, and diagnosis of ‘viral pericarditis’ isconfirmed. (early
pericarditis, all investigations may benormal).

Heart Song

>From faint heartsounds and murmurs to the rustle of respiratory lung sounds,
>from theperistaltic ‘borborygmi’ to the soft fast ticking heart sounds of the
>unbornbaby, the abnormal ‘bruit’ of renal artery stenosis to the ‘pistol shot’
>soundsover the femoral arteries, auscultationby the stethoscope is so
>fascinating. The professor would place hisstethoscope, close his eyes, listen
>intently and announce which heart valve wasnarrowed, which one leaked and
>which one was in good health.

Imaging in, Stethoscope out

Advances in thescience of imaging especially echocardiography has taken the
thrill out ofdiagnosis. Introduction of Bedside and handheld echo made the
heart image lightup at the touch of a button at the bedside. With a clarity and
sensitivity far more than a human ear.

Wait

But even today, the stethoscope has one unchallenged use.It is one ID that
would letsmoothly sail past all the hospital security.

Notwithstanding,fingerprint and face-ID.
