Malgova mango

Dear friends,

After meals I was enjoying eating cut bits of one ofthe medium malgova mangoes
purchased yesterday. Three mangoes were purchasedmaking it one kg.

They were fully ripening yesterday itself and shop mansuggested- sir, Please
eat either today or tomorrow. Fully ripen. Season isover. Last stock.

While enjoying sweetness and smell and eating, nostalgic memories about malgova
mango came to me. I thought of sharing. Thereis nothing important other than
time pass in this posting.

1.           We got only two mangos

I was just joined Salem as Telephone Inspector onpractical training during
1965. Bachelor life and lodge stay. My father sent aletter to me- Since you are
at Salem, if possible  sent Malgoa mangoes through Doraisami comingsoon here.
Dorai samy was my late eldest brother working in railways, at thattime in
Arkonam. I got him with great effort on phone in the railway station numberand
got details of his travel to native. I said I will meet him with the mango
basketbefore the coach.

Salem railway station had two peculiarities on thosedays. First one- Only one
lengthy platform. It could accommodate two trains.Second most of the important
trains passed Salem junction in the midnight, mostwill be sleeping.

On theparticular day of my brother’s travel, Madras –Trivandrum mail came and
Irushed to the 3rd class sleeper coach. Door was closed. Hitting hard-no
purpose served. Time is passing. I started calling in loud voice- Anna,Anna..
He opened  the door and came. “Igot a nap, train is before time. So I was not
in door”

I handed over the heavy basket with a dozen of largemalgova mangoes. By the
time he gotin to, the  train moved

He was with sister in law and two kids. He got down atMavelikkara, sister in
law’s native.

His mother in law was very happy to see the basketfulof mangoes. She felt it
was for her. She distributed and kept for herself  about ten numbers  and
packed two in a cover and said- Whileyou go to Pandalam give to your parents.
They will be happy. Either mybrother or sister in law could express keep at
least half to in laws/parents.

My parents could well imagine the predicament. Immediatelythe two was cut to
pieces and eaten by parents, my elder brother, his wife andson.

Later I was appointed at Sankari as phone inspector. When I went to native on
vacation   with a basket full of mangoes. My late mother  asked- You just send
two mangoes throughAnna?

I replied, Isend a few more and probably given by him to mother in law. I
purposely avoidedsending a basketful of mangoes.

2.          Planting mango nut.

After cutting sides  nut of one large mango with njettu( holdingend) was
planted in a vacant place in front of home. What a wonder – It appearedas
seedling, grew, started branching even at five feet growth. Large sizemangoes
appeared years  after years. My sister in law  in native used to tell, they
cover the treepartially not to get evil eye;

But whenever I went home it was just appearing astree, not season for
flowering. I used to pluck tender leaves and eat.

3.          Constructing home.

Years passed. My eldest brother just mentioned, itcould be better to have
partition. I told my father and he agreed. Chain surveywas done  and properly
divided in tothree parts. The mango tree came in to my share.

I thought of constructing a simple home and to have a separateroom for my
father in it as he desired . When planning was done, I had to cutthe mango tree
for laying thefoundation. No alternative. So it was cut and home completed in
native. My latefather spent almost all time in it and had his death in 1991 in
my home. He was83.

New home in Chennai

After retirement it was decided to settle in Chennai, giving the built home for
a small value to my elder brother , who was very muchinterested to have it.

While gardening in my Chennai home , just like that Igot a malgova sapling and
planted it  inthe compound at back yard.

It started growing, leaves and stem appeared like malgova, but when mango
appeared, it was large like malgova, but with thick skin.

After ripen, when cut it had more  fiber.  Still  I was happy of a malgova
plant. After 4-5years in all mango trees in my area some virus  appeared, it
will be itching if we stand nearmango tree. Everybody started cutting and
removing mango trees from thecompound , I too followed.

Proposing toplant the seed

I told my wife, we will plant the seeds after fullmangoes are consumed.
