Q2      What are the cones on airplane wings?

A2      Rebecca Williams,Experience in Aviation10h

Thecones on airplane wings are not actually part of the wings, but rather
fairings that cover themechanisms of the flaps, which are movable surfaces on
the trailingedge of the wings that help the plane to take off and land. The
fairings have a sharp shapeto reduce the drag caused by the flap tracks and
actuators, and tosmooth out the airflow around the wing.

The fairings are also sometimes calledanti-shock bodies because they help to
delay or prevent the formation of shockwaves when theplane is flying at
transonic speeds (close to the speed of sound).

You may see a cloud of vapor forming aroundthe wing or the fairing, especially
during take-off and landing. This is notcaused by the cones themselves, but by
the low pressure and low temperaturethat occur over the wing when theplane is
flying at high angles of attack (the angle between the wing and theairflow).
When the air temperature drops below the dew point, the water vaporin the air
condenses into tiny droplets, forming a visible cloud. Thisphenomenon is called
a vapor cone or a shock collar, and it can also happenaround other parts of the
plane, such as the nose or the tail.
