CULTURAL QA 09-2023-05A

Q1         What are some tips you have for fallingasleep quickly, or for when
you can't fall asleep but want to?

A1          Nela Canovic, Hacking my sleep atnight to optimize my brain during
the day.2y

Afterexperiencing 2020, let me just say this: you are not alone. There are many
(perhaps most?) of us who are having trouble fallingasleep.

Andno wonder. We’ve been worrying about the COVID-19 pandemic, seeing
politicalchanges happen in many countries, having to work remotely,
experiencingeconomic downturns and loss of jobs, not to mention paying bills,
working onpersonal relationships, and so on. That is a LOT. And because many of
theseevents are out of our control, we react by letting emotions take over.

The body, in turn, also reacts — our heart rate goes up, our breathingbecomes
shallow, the nervous system goes into overdrive, and our brain conjuresawful
scenarios, creating an anxiety loop that is hard to get out of.

That’s why some nights it can feel impossibleto fall asleep at all.Lately I’ve
been practicing one exercise and it has helped quite a bit.So much so that I
also practice it during the day. It’s calledthe 4–7–8 breathing exercise.

What is this exercise?

It is a technique developed by integrativemedicine practitioner Dr. Andrew Weil

Dr. Weil calls it “a naturaltranquilizer for the nervous system.”The goal is to
use your breath to help your mind focus only on breathing andnot on random
thoughts. If you are nervous or tense, you’re probably “shallowbreathing” — not
inhaling sufficient oxygen into your lungs.

Butwith 4–7–8, you counteract the shallow breathing by forcing yourself to
inhaleslowly and holding your breath to enable oxygen to enter your bloodstream.

How do you practice it?

Closeyour mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of 4.

Holdyour breath for a count of 7.

Exhalecompletely through your mouth, making a loud whoosh sound to a count of 8.

Repeat the cycle four times.

Q2         What are the four things one mustnot  feel shame?

A2         Elia Juniana,1h

Oldclothes because your clothes doesn't define your talent.

Oldparents because what you are today is because of them.

Simpleliving because success can't be judged by appearance.

Poor friends because there is no statusis friendship.

Q4         What are some of the best examples ofhonesty and humanity?

A4         Rohit Virmani, Knows English8mo

11-years-ago, a doctor named BhagwantSingh performed an appendectomy(a surgical
operation in which the vermiform appendix is removed) on a man who was dying
ofstomach pain.

Atthat time, the man named Ram Sahay didn’t have any money to pay the doctor. On
knowing his financial status, Singh verylovingly said to him that whenever he
manages to collect the money,he can come and give it to him.

Thedoctor never expected to get his fee and probably forgot about him as well.
ButSahay didn’t. In the last decade,he collected the money he owed to Singh and
came down from Haridwar to Punjabto give him that.

Sahayreached hospital to meet the Doctor. Since Mr. Singh was out of town,
Sahay waited for him for two days sothat he could pay his debt.

Sahaysaid to the Doctor (Mr. Singh): “I always remembered that I was indebted
to Mr.Singh. Today, I want to unloadthat burden by paying back.”

Mr.Singh: “For me, the fact that he came back after 11 years with the intention
topay me is a huge thing.”

Mr. Singh returned the money and huggedSahay.

That's simply great!! Doc. operated aneedy person in distress without any
money, and the person who owed him cameback to pay the debt. Both are great
example of humanity and honesty.

A big round of applause to both 👏👏👏

Q6         What is the best life advice you wouldgive?

A6         Juveria Siddiqui,Student2y

Ahigh ranking Army Officer was invited by my school to give a pep talk sort a
thing to us 12thgraders.

Hewent on telling about his life story and then asked us “Who is the topper of
the commerce section? “

Agirl who was sitting few rows behind me raised her hand.

“Okay" He said “Can somebody tell me why is she the topper? And notsomebody
else? “

Sheis supremely intelligent. She works harder than us.She is able to memorize
morestuff.

These were some of the replies by thestudents.

But what the officer said was

“She tops because you guys let hertop".

Seeingour puzzled expression he continued,

“You people have subconsciously accepted that she’ll alwaysscore the highest.

And no matter how hard you study, youthink that she musthave studied harder.

And that way, she tops, because you alltry to score good, but nobodytries to
score better than her.”

And that day I realized, how we createlimits in ourminds, just by accepting
that we won't be able to do some particular thing.

Let's break those limits and know that weare worth everything.

Q7         Can you tell me something inspiring?

A7         Kanthaswamy Balasubramaniam, FormerChief Manager at Central Bank of
India (1987–2017)2y

There was a young boy who lost hisfather at the age of 3.

His mother could not bear the visits of their landlordand their creditors and
so she decided to kill the little boy and his sisterand herself. The littleboy
realized something was wrong and told their neighbor who sent atelegram to the
lady’sfather who took the family with him to Cannore in Kerala.

The boy loved music but sadly his familycould not afford a music teacher. So
theboy decided to earn the money he needed to learn music. He worked at a
localpeanut and sundal (boiled chickpea) stall outside a movie theatre for
paymentof 8 Annas (50 Paise) per week and whenever a song was played - he would
standoutside and learn the stanzas and hum them in tune.

His evenings would be spent in standingoutside the music teachers house
-listening to his teachings and practising the same but with variations.

This poor boy - performed in every schoolfunction - often going to school just
for singing in functions (and boycotting any classes) untilin one function -
the Music Teacher himself was the chief guest and was soimpressed that he
decided to teach the boy for free.

During this time - the Boy learntHarmonium on his own when his Guru was not
around.

Do you know who this Boy who was nearlykilled by hismother was? The Boy who had
to desperately scrimp and save just to learn music? The Boy who could not even
afford to fix a gate to his rented house in the1950s? The Man who was visited
by his creditors every day when he was workingas a Arranger for a Prominent
Music Director.

Hewas one of the Greatest Music Directors in Tamil Cinema - Mr M S
Viswanathanalso called Mellisai Mannar (King of Light Music) who composed songs
for over800 Films in a career spanning 60 years

Andhe paid all his debts

For a Rs. 200/- Loan by Actor J P Chandrababu in the 1950s to fix hisgate -
This Man allowed Chandrababu to stay in his outhouse for a mere Rs. 20/- per
month rent and even allowed Chandrababuto eat at his own table and even to eat
non vegetarian food.

Forteaching him Music for Free - this man paid the house rent for his Guru -
ShriSubbiah Naidu and a sum of Rs. 300/- a month for the rest of his life.

He paid Rs. 35000/- in the 1981 to purchase the house where he hadlived with
his Grandfather and his mother in Cannore even though themarket value of the
house was not more than Rs. 15,000/-. Once he purchased the house- he giftedthe
house in 1983 to the Schoolteacher of the Local School to live for hisentire
life (until the school closed down in 2009)

Once when he was 7 years old, a richfriend mocked at his request toclimb into a
British Car (Brand not known) because he was poorly dressed.

He later purchased 5 such cars all withnumbers MSV 001 - 005. You cansee one of
the cars in the movie Thillu Mullu (2013 version).

Itis one of the most inspiring stories in Tamil Cinema of a Nobody rising to
thetop on nothing but Grit Determination, Skill and Talent.

Onlythe story of a Bus Conductor from Bangalore who became the Superstar -
exceedsthis story ininspiration but it has been told many many times to attract
any novelty.
