Q1         What can I learn in 5 minutes that can change my life?

A1          Rohit Malshe, Chem Engineer,Programmer, Amazon research scientist
Updated 3y

A few things can be learned in justfive minutes that can help you in your
lifetime:

Yourlife is largely affected by the decisions that you make, and the actions
thatyou take.

Alot of the times, the damage you cause to yourself or your immediate
colleaguesis a result of two things: Imbalanced thinking, and angry actions.

Imbalanced thinking:

Toseriously enhance the thinking process, all you need to do is to do a
littlebit of exercise. Your brain automatically gets more blood flow, and you
can get far betterideas if you go on a short walk, or do some push-ups, or just
a little bit ofjogging.    This not only will help youget better ideas but also
more fruitful ideas.

Controlling emotions and actions:

Tocontrol the emotions, and most importantly, actions taken after you are
angry, you really need to learn “to not send an angry email”.

All you need to do is: You can typean email if you want. You can be as angry as
you want to be, but DO NOT sendit.

Saveit and keep it in outlook saved email folder. Go for about 15 minutes of
hardrunning and vigorous exercise.

Whatever anger you have containedwithin yourself, throw all that anger in the
exercise.

Then when you return, not only yourmuscles will be stronger, but also, your
mind will be calmer. This way, you practice and comport yourself with restraint.

Then re-type the sameemail in the most polite words, and state only the facts
that matter.

Should you choose, youcan even wait an entire day before sending the email.

Thisis one of the most important things I observed between junior engineers,
andreally amazing managers wherever I worked.

Reallyamazing managers never lose their patience.

Theystay focused and stay on course.

Theylook at facts and figures and keep angry emotions away from the workplace.

Theytake actions when things fail no matter what the root cause of the failure
is,and contain the problem.

Thenwhen they have analyzed all the facts and done all the postmortems, make
cleardecisions and take actions.

It is far more important to have anunbiased, calm, methodical, and clear
thinking than to operate with anger atwork place.

Nowsome of you might visualize Steve Jobs and would say ~ “wow! He was quite
theopposite”, but don’t forget that before you actually build the attitude
ofSteve Jobs, you really need to build the skills of Steve Jobs.

Toread this whole post, I think I have taken your 5 minutes, but if you do
thesethings a few times, I guarantee you that you would get a lot more respect
atyour work place, and would build trust and connections for a long term.

Then, over months of interactions withothers, you would realize, that you would
stop getting angry, you would buildpatience, and that is a real virtue!

Stayblessed, and stay inspired!

Q2         What are some unusual signs of high intelligence in anindividual?

A2         Irma Bennett, Studied at StellenboschUniversity3h

I’m a fairly bright guy. But during mypost-doc, I made friends with a number of
actual, high end geniuses.

Atfirst I envied their intellectual ability. Extremelydifficult problems, that
nobody was available to help them with so the problemswere tackled alone. One
thing every one of them had in common was that they hada range of interests
that they pursued with real passion. A good friend, in addition tophysics, was
an alternate for the German Olympic bike team. He was a masterhome brewer and
coffee roaster. He built telescopes…. Everything he did was110%

The other thing they had in common wasthat they were very frequently
frustrated. The world is made for “average”. Not for IQs of 150. This same
friend wouldexplain something to me about his technique. I’m a PhD chemist. I
know a littlebit about it. But hewould get annoyed that I could not keep up.
Except NOBODY could keep up.So he was frequently angry. Often times rude. Sort
of oblivious of people’sfeelings.

The envy I initially felt laterturned into sympathy. I’m not as smart as that.
Not even close…..

Thisman survived the unthinkable on 9/11.

Stanley Praimnath, was working on the81st floor of theSouth Tower of the World
Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

He was a vice president at Fuji Bank, aprestigious Japanesefinancial
institution. He had a nice office with a view of the Statue ofLiberty and the
Hudson River.

Hehad a good life, a loving family, and a strong Christian faith.

But everything changed in an instantwhen he saw a plane flying straight toward
his building.

Helater recalled:

"Isaw this giant airplane coming towards me eye level, eye contact. I'm
lookingat the cockpit of the plane and I see the red markings on it and I
realize it's an American Airlinesplane." He instinctively ducked under his desk
and prayed: "Lord, Ican't do this! You take over!"

Theplane crashed into the building between floors 77 and 85, just above
Stanley'soffice.

Theimpact was so powerful that it tore a hole in the wall behind him and
suckedout everything in his office except his desk, which shielded him from
theflames and debris. He wastrapped in a small space with no way out.

Meanwhile,on the same floor, another man was looking for survivors. Hisname was
Brian Clark,a Canadian executive at Euro Brokers, another financialfirm.

He had escaped from his office on the 84thfloor, which was at the top ofthe
impact zone, and was heading down Stairway A, the only one that wasn'tdestroyed
by the plane.

On his way down, he heard a faint voicecrying for help from behind a wall of
rubble.

Hefollowed the sound and found Stanley's hand waving through a hole. He shone
hisflashlight and saw Stanley's eyes staring back at him.

He grabbed his hand and pulled him overthe wall.

Stanleywas overjoyed to see Brian. He kissed him and said:

"I'mStanley! We'll be brothers for life!" Brian agreed and said: "Let'sgo home."

Thetwo men made their way down the stairs, dodging smoke and debris along the
way. They reached the groundfloor at 9:55 am, just five minutes before the South
Tower collapsed.

Theyran out of the building and hugged each other in relief. They had just
becometwo of only four survivors from above the south tower impact zone.

Stanleylater said that he owed his life to God and Brian. He said: "God sent
anangel to save me." Brian said:

"Idon't know why I survived when so many others didn't. I guess God had
otherplans for me."

After 9/11, Stanley became aPentecostal pastor and a popular inspirational
speaker with religious groupsand churches. He also remained close friends with
Brian, who he calls hisbrother for life.
