Q1        Doesthe Brahmaputra River near the Kamakhya Temple really turn red
representing thegoddess Parvati's menstrual cycle?

A1         DevKumar,Jan 6

Kamakhya Devi Temple; BrahmaputraRiver turns Red for three days

This is something reallyunusual that every year during the month of June the
river water turns red. It is believed that it is the time, Devi
Kamakhyamenstruates. During this time Devi temple remains closed for 3 days.

Then on the fourth day when the doorgot opened for the Devi Darshan, a huge
celebration is performed. Also, theholy water is circulated among the devotees
of Kamakhya Devi. It is also saidthat visiting the temple at this time and
having that holy water is reallyauspicious.

However, there is no actual scientificproof behind this but this is something
really interesting to know why once ina year it turns red. It is actually the
miracle of Devi.

As per some people, the priests pourscarlet pigment into the waters that make
it red. But as we know thatmenstruation is the sign of a woman’s originality
and supremacy to give birth. So, the holy being and temple of Kamakhya rejoice
this power or ‘shakti’ insideevery woman.

Other scientific reasons behindturning red; Some people say that there is some
red algae growth that tookplace in the June month due to which the color of the
river turns to red.

Some people even say that chemicalreactions in between the minerals occur. This
liberates red chemicals whichmakes it red. There are somepeople who gave two
important reasons to it;

The first reason is that the soil of that area is rich in iron
contentnaturally. This already gives the water a blood red like color.

The second’s reasons say that theshrine of Kamakhya is situated in the
mountain. The mountains which have large deposits of Cinnabar. The chemical name
of Cinnabar is mercury sulfide (HgS) and it has a blood redcolor which gives it
a red color.

Some say the iron-rich soil of the riverbank turns red in the monsoon andflows
into the water.

Moreover, in the Kamakhya temple rockpieces are usually sold in the name of
Kamakhya or Kamiya Sindoor. It is oftensaid that this red color sindoor has the
immense ability to control the mindpower. So it is also called as the
Vashikaran sindoor. This sindoor is utilizedfor making spiritual items. The
items that protect us from your enemy, evilsouls. It is also used to for
resolving the problems of black magic.

In consequence, this mineral cinnabar is thus closely linked with
Shaktiworship. Other thanKamakhya temple there is one more temple which is
situated in the areas wherethere are large cinnabar deposits. This is Hinglaj
at Pakistan. It is named for Hingula, theSanskrit word for cinnabar.

कामाख्ये वरदे देवी नीलपर्वत वासिनि l

त्वं देवि जगतः माता योनिमुद्रे नमोस्तुते॥

Bhagavati, the feminine aspect ofDivine has expressed Herself as the Mother of
the entire creation and She hasbeen described by Sastras as Visvayoniḥ (The
womb that sustains and from whichemerges the multiverse), Viyatprasu (She who
gives birth to the Akasa) andJagajjanani Jagdamba (the Mother of the worlds).
Innumerable devotees haveexpressed their devotion and Love for Mother and have
received Her grace andaffection in return.

AmbubachiMela, also known as Ambubasi festival, is held annually during monsoon
in theKamakhya Devi Temple at Guwahati. The Great, Unique and Surreal
AmbubachiFestival at Nilacala, the shrine of Mata Kamakhya, also known as Yoni
Piṭham,is one of the most auspicious occasion for Saktas, especially those who
followthe path of Tantra, which goes on for 3 days. The Ambubachi festival is
relatedto the Tantric cult and is also known as Kamkhya Devi Puja.

It is believed that Goddess Kamakhyagoes through her menstrual cycle during
these days and therefore the templeremains closed for three days. Lakhs of
devotees gather there to celebrate thisglorious Mela festival, whose grandeur
is unparalleled!

कुलीना कुलवत्यंबा दुर्गा दुर्गति नाशिनी!

TheAmbubachi Mela is the most important mela celebrated in the Kamakhya Temple
inGuwahati, Assam in India. This yearly mela is celebrated during themonsoon
season that happens to fall during the Assamese month Ahaar (or AshaarKrishna
Paksha Ashtami by Indian Panchang) when the Brahmaputra River is inspate. It is
the celebration of the yearly menstruation course of goddessKamakhya.

It is believed that the presidingGoddess of the temple, Devi Kamakhya, the
Mother Shakti, goes through herannual cycle of menstruation during this time
stretch so a bolt of white purecotton cloth is placed in the yoni and the
temple sealed. When it is reopenedthe cloth is found to be soaked with a dark
red substance, this is a verysought after Prasad for devotees as it has
miraculous properties very smallpieces or even threads are distributed as
Prasad and is eagerly sought.

It is also believed that during themonsoon rains the creative and nurturing
power of the 'menses' of Mother Earthbecomes accessible to devotees at this
site during the mela. There is no idolof the presiding deity but she is
worshipped in the form of a yoni-like stoneinstead over which a natural spring
flows. The temple remains closed for threedays during the mela for it is
believed that mother earth becomes unclean forthree days like the traditional
women's menstrual seclusion. During these threedays, some restrictions are
observed by the devotees like not cooking, notperforming puja or reading holy
books, no farming etc.

त्रीम त्रीम हूं हूं स्त्रीम स्त्रीम कामाख्यै प्रसीद स्त्रीम स्त्रीम हूं हूं
त्रीम त्रीम त्रीम स्वाहा...

Afterthree days Devi Kamakhya is bathed and other rituals are performed to
ensurethat the Devi retrieves her purity. Then the doors of the temple
arereopened and Prasad is distributed On the fourth day the devotees are
allowedto enter the temple and worship devi Kamakhya. This mela is also known
as Ametior Tantric fertility festival since it is closely associated with
TantricShakti cult prevalent in eastern parts of India it is supposed to be
mostpotent and Siddhi Dayak period for Tantra Sadhana. Even some Tantric Babas
maketheir public appearances only during these four days.

The rest of the year, they remain inseclusion. Some Babas are seen displaying
their psychic powers like puttingtheir heads in a pit and stand upright on it,
standing on one leg for hours ata stretch. The Prasad is distributed in two
forms – Angodak and Angabastra.Angodak literally means the fluid part of the
body - water from the spring andAngabastra literally means the cloth covering
the body - a piece of the redcloth used to cover the stone yoni during the days
of menstruation.

TheKamakhya temple is realized as the symbol of woman’s power and
naturalfunctioning. The process of menstruation which is most private topicand
kind of taboo in the society is differently shown here in this temple. Herethis
natural phenomenon of every woman is perceived with a huge respect
byworshippers and followers of the Goddess. We should not forget the fact
that,it is the symbol of ‘Shakti’ women strength and supremacy of giving birth
thatevery woman across this universe possessed.

Everyyear lakhs of pilgrims, starting from Sadhus to householders, from all
overIndia, come to Guwahati to observe this festival. They include
Sanyasins,black-clad Aghoras, the Khade-babas, the Baul or singing minstrels of
WestBengal, intellectual and folk Tantriks, Sadhus and Sadhvis with long
mattedhair etc. Even foreigners from abroad come to seek blessings of
MotherKamakhya.

Dovisit the Vairabhi temple, Bagalmukhi temple and Bhubaneshwari temple. The
viewis great from Bhubaneshwari temple. Chinnamasta temple, Kali temple andTara
temple are nearby main complex and are hard to miss. Also it is said that
Kamakhya darshan isincomplete without the blessing of Umananda. It is the
temple on anisland in Brahmaputra. You can get ferries from Xhukleshwar Ghat
near PanBazaar.

My note- There is a famousDevi temple at Chengannur (Alleppy District) in
Kerala where Devi ishaving menses periodically. Earlier it was regular,
nowadays once a while

Q2        Ifhydrogen is the lightest element, and oxygen is also light, why
does waterweigh so much?

A2         GeoffreyWiddison, Crazy about chemistry since I was a kid. BS and
MEng in ChemicalEngineering. I've caused a few reactions in my time.Updated 3y

This is actually a great question. The simple answer is that water is polar,
and hydrogen and oxygen arenot. But that’s probably unsatisfying, so let’s back
up.

When you talk about how much waterweighs, you’re presumably referring to
density. This is actually a bitconfusing because we use the same word for
something that’s not heavy assomething that’s not dense. For instance, a steel
paperclip is dense, but not heavy. A tonof styrofoam is heavy, but not dense.

The fact is, unsurprisingly, the massof a water molecule is between the mass of
diatomic hydrogen and the mass ofdiatomic oxygen. Which means that water
molecules are lighter than the typical molecules that make upair. Water vapor,
therefore, is actually pretty light.

But, at room temperature, hydrogen and oxygen are both gasses, whilewater is a
liquid. And liquids are almost always much denser than gasses, making liquid
water much more dense than either hydrogen or oxygen.

So, why is water a liquid when thetwo reactants are both gasses? Polarity.
Hydrogen and oxygenmolecules are both basically symmetrical. Water, on the
other hand (for somefairly complicated reasons) is not symmetrical, it’s
positively charged on oneside, and negatively charged on the other. Since
positive and negative charges attract one another, water molecules tend to clump
together when they get close, pulling them into adense liquid. As an analogy,
imagine tossing a bunch of tiny magnetsinto close proximity. They’d quickly
pull together into a single, tight mass.Whereas small bits of non-magnetic
metal would just spread out, maybe bounceoff each other, but otherwise not
affect on another.

And that’s the reality of most gasses. They’re generally non-polar, which allows
them to float around in the air andremain separate.

Butany polarity means that two molecules that come close to each other will
tendto pull together, and if you have a lot of molecules close to one
another, they’ll pull into a single mass of liquid. And then that liquid falls.

My note- Simple and best answer

Q3        Whatthree things should a person avoid once they are past 70 years
old?

A3         TomBedell, Oct 11

In my 76th year here. Relativelyhealthy and hope to stay so. Age changes things
whether one cares to admit itor not. My three biggestavoidances are:

While driving DON’T ignore your body when it speaks. Can’t seeat night? Don’t
drive at night. Cars whizzing past you at 80mph makes yourpalms sweaty? Stay
off the interstate. You get the picture.

Stay off anything higher than your knees. Past 70, no matter howmuch you work
out or hike or ya, ya, ya, your body injures easier and healsharder and longer.
The higher you go, the bigger potential injury. The risk offalling because your
reflexes, no matter how quick, have diminished is great atany height.

Don’t waste energy being angry at the system. Accept the changes in theway
things are done in all aspects of your life. Accept them as yourparents had to
accept the changes you brought about. The system is about theyoung and their
future. Just as it was for you.

Quitcomplaining and get onboard. If you don’t your life will just keep getting
harderand harder.
