Q3         How didIndians 3,000 years ago come to know about planets in the
solar system?

A3         SilkRoad, AI Expert Oct 21

They were pretty smart and observant, and they had a lot ofinterest in astrology
and astronomy. They used the stars and the planets to make predictions
andcharts, and they came up with some cool theories and math models.

Oneof the earliest texts that talks about astronomy is the Rigveda, which dates
back to around 2000 BC or even earlier.

It shows that the Indians had a calendar based on the solar year, and they knew
about the four cardinal points.

They also recorded some events likeeclipses and comets. The Jyotisa Vedanga is
another text that has someastronomical data from around 4000 BC or maybe even
11000 BC.

It's hard to tell for sure, becausesome of the stuff is written in religious
terms.

The Indians also had contact with othercultures like the Babylonians, Greeks,
and Persians, and they exchanged ideasand theories.

They learned a lot from them, but they also had their own contributions.
Forexample, they had a heliocentric model of the solar system, which means
theythought that the Sun was at the center and the planets orbited around it.

That's pretty impressive, consideringthat some people in Europe still believed
in a geocentric model until the 16thcentury.

TheIndians also had a concept of Navagraha, which means nine heavenly bodies.

They included the Sun, the Moon, andfive planets that are visible to the naked
eye: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.

The other two were Rahu and Ketu, which are not really planets but points where
the Moon crosses the eclipticplane.

They thought that these points caused eclipses when they swallowed theSun or
the Moon.

So, that's how Indians 3,000 yearsago came to know about planets in the solar
system. They usedtheir eyes, their brains, and their curiosity to explore the
sky and figure outhow it works.

They had some mistakes and myths, but they also had some facts and insights.
Their legacyis still alive today in math, science, and culture.

Q4         What aresome signs that it may be time to stop taking care of your
elderly parents?

A4         AishwaryaSK, A deep thinker with a lot to express! Updated Aug 23

My grandmother passed away peacefullylast month at 87 in an assisted living
home in Pune, India.

Shelived there for just 2 months, and trust me, that was the best gift my
parentswere able to give her.

This is a picture of her from earlierthis year.

My father, already a senior citizen, was overburdened with taking care of my mom
- who had suffered a paralyticattack, and his mom - who was battling dementia &
old-age physical issues.

I helped in person and online as muchas possible, but my grandmother needed
constant supervision and care. Last 60 years of her life were wipedout from her
memory. She remembered nothing after her own wedding. Nowonder she was always
confused and didn’t recognise us, or the home we stayedin.

She would turn on the gas in thekitchen and forget, spill food all over the
place, slip in the bathroom, removeher diaper and spoil the bed, talk
constantly, shout at my parents, ask thesame questions repeatedly, and had
seriously become a danger to herself.

The nurse we hired was of no use because my grandmother used to verballyabuse
her and have my father clean her up instead. She did not remember that he is
her son, and that it’snot easy for him to change his mom’s diapers. He was like
a servant for her whowould be available on every call. All this was taking a
toll on my father.

It was then that our relatives and I convinced him to move her to an oldage
home. It was emotionally challenging, since the thought of “what will people say
about us” did come to his mind.Luckily, it wasn’t a stigma in our family
because dad’s cousins had done so inthe past.

He chose a home just 15 mins away and let her stay for a weekend on trialbasis.
To our relief, she made new friends and didn’t wantto come back. She had found
her tribe. After moving her permanently, my parentsvisited twice a week and
within half an hour she’d joyfully ask them to leaveas it was time for her fun
activities.

Ever since her memory loss, she was the happiest in those 2 months.

Surrounded by her age folks, playinggames, chatting all day, participating in
activities, exercising regularly, meetingyoung volunteers, and being taken care
of by staff round the clock.

That’s what an old dependent personneeds.

When you cannot give them this levelof attention, and as a result their mental
& physical condition isworsening along with yours, it’s a sign that you should
stop trying harder. They need professional care beyond a point. Even if youkeep
a 24×7 nurse at home, the elderly might become bored to death.

The staff in these homes are youngpeople with physical strength who are trained
to not take insults personally, treat the residents with much love and patience,
and keep them productivelyengaged. Their own family can’t do thatbecause of
attachments and resentments developed over the years.

This wasn’t just an old age homebecause they even took care of a depressed
suicidal woman in her 30s whosefather could not look after her 24×7. So I think
it’s high time to let goof the negativity associated with assisted living,
which brands the youngergeneration as escapists.

Nobody is asking to abandon elderly parents. You actually can’t, becauseyou are
required to pay for all these facilities. Government isn’t doinganything.

So, just find better ways to arriveat a win-win situation.

Edit:Thank you all for the overwhelming response in just a few days. Many of
you reached out to me for details of thisparticular home, and I have responded
to all. For privacy reasons I won’t postthe address here. I don’t get the
notification for every comment. Please feelfree to text me directly. Happy to
help!

Q5         Why shouldspirituality be a part of every individual?

A5         RamaG, Lives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India48m

This is the answer from my MGM lion. (My mother in law).

Spirituality helps you to make a betterchoice in your life sometimes when we
are floating away in the materialisticworld.

Inmost of the cases, spirituality helps you to be a better person above all.

Amid everything which happens in ourlife, it becomes hard for any human being
to have a straight face and be niceto everyone though they think otherwise.

This is when the idea of spiritualitybecomes important to us.

We can start making better choices inour life. In general, we canhave a
sympathetic heart and try to feel everyone’s pain. Because, weunderstand that
is the thing God likes not the physical offerings wedo.

This hard lesson I learnt from her. She told this when I felt bad for not doing
regular puja and all when my sonwas a months baby.

Once we start to sympathise with everyone in our life, the chance tobecome a
better person is always there.

Wewill learn how to be contented in life. Not a cribbing soul.

Ifyou practice spirituality, then you will have a positive outlook on life and
accept things the way you are. The approach is tohelp add some better features
in your life and to make yourself the bestversion that you wish to see in the
mirror.

Spiritual wellness can be a religiousor non-religious.

Few years back, her new tenant came. She lost her baby of two years old. When I
don't know. She cried, cried, criedfor months together. Stopped eating proper
food, neglected self, husband, house, in one word, her life itself. Her husband
couldn't see her in thatcondition and shifted out of their own house. Came as
tenant to my Mil’s house.

Feeding her timely itself became a bigtask for him. Took her to concerned
doctors. But no use. She was under depression. Started living in her ownworld.
Sits in front of God Krishna and cries.

After few days my mother in law observed this. They are very young couple at
that time. She couldn't see herlike that. She tried alot andfinally took her to
a temple. Told her, ‘being aged she needs a support.

Can't she do that much to an oldlady?

Generally she doesn't believe ingoing to temples regularly. She does Puja in
her own style at home only.

There is a small Krishna temple nearby their house.Once reaching there this
young mom started crying again.

My Mil asked her why she is crying as if she doesn't know anything abouther. She
replied she lost her baby. How cruel god is. Why he did it.

My Mil replied. “Everything happens for a reason. You are crying sinceyou lost
your baby. Think, may be that baby wants to be with you only for ashort time.
In this birth you are mom and baby. You don't know what she is and what you are
in your previous births. The Babymight have come to you to repay some cosmic
indebtedness. ‘Runam’. It's done. So, she left.

That baby must have reborn some other place now. If she comes to know how her
mother is crying for her howsad she will be. Can anyone go against god's will?
He is not the one who decides when to come and whento go?”

She felt shocked and asked my Mil.‘Why? Am I such a bad mother to be hated by
my own baby? She left me?’

My Mil replied , ‘to depart or to stay away youneed not be cruel, bad or some
other thing in your life. It's destiny. That's it. Think that way. No one is an
exception. Including Gods.

Krishna is your favourite God naa? What's his life? Born to a mother but never
lived his childhood with her. Grewup with another mother but there also he
couldn't live with her till the end. From day one fought with demons and
survived. No marriage is done according tohis choice in adulthood. Everyone
came to him on their own. Expressed theirlove or requested him to marry them or
were offered their hand to him by theirparents. There are many things he did
without involving himself infact. He wasborn to perform his task.

Did he cry or his mothers cry? Thereis something called destiny. Fate. He
accepted it. He is born to set right somethings . He finished them and went
back from where he has come. Isn't it?

What he lived and faced you try toforget. What he is conveying you try to
understand’.

That young mom started spending some time with my Mil. They stayed forthree
years there. She became pregnant again and touched my Mil’s feet and hadbaby
shower done by her and left for delivery. Later they vacated the house andwent
back to theirs.

Spirituality promotes a practical, understanding and calm approach toschool,
work, and family needs. In other words, it gives youconfidence in your
instincts and provides the strength you need to move towardsuccess.

It need not religious always. It's away of counseling. It's soothing to an
agitated mind. A psychological supportif taken and understood in a right way.

Fools say, it makes you lethargic andan escapist. But it's not true. Arjun
fought the war after listening BhagavadGita. Didn't become a Sanyasi. Vairagi.

Finally,

The purpose of spirituality is not tomake God say yes to our plans. To get
strength to say yes to god's plans.

Q7         Is iron inyour blood the same as metal?

A7         SilkRoad, AI Expert Oct 25

Not exactly.

We know that iron is a metal element that can be found in different formsin
nature. It can be pure iron, like inmeteorites, or it can be mixed with other
elements, like in iron ore or steel.

Iron can also be part of proteins, like hemoglobin and myoglobin, that carry
oxygen in your blood and muscles.

Hemoglobin is the main protein inyour red blood cells. It has four iron atoms
in its center that can bind tooxygen molecules.

You see, when you breathe in, yourhemoglobin picks up oxygen from your lungs
and carries it to your tissues. Whenyou breathe out, your hemoglobin drops off
the oxygen and picks up carbondioxide.

Myoglobin is similar to hemoglobin, but it's found in your muscle cells. It has
only one iron atom that can bind to oxygen.

It acts like a backup oxygen supplyfor your muscles when you exercise or need
extra energy.

So,iron in your blood is not exactly the same as metal iron.

It'spart of a complex protein that has a different shape and function than
metaliron.

Metal iron forms a crystal structurethat makes it hard and strong. Iron in your
blood forms a ring structure thatmakes it flexible and able to bind to oxygen.

But they are both made of the same element: iron. Iron has the same number of
protons and electrons nomatter what form it takes.

The difference is how the iron atomsare arranged and what other atoms they are
bonded to.

So you may still be confused.

You can think of it like this: metal iron is like a Lego brick, and iron in
your blood is like a Legosculpture.

They are both made of the samematerial, but they have different shapes and
purposes.
