*WRAPPER AND COVER*

*DEAR FRIENDS,*

*I made a lot of search in the Google to find the exact usage of words
wrapper and cover. In many occasions the word wrapper is used in place of
cover and finally I came to the one main difference - wrapper is tight
covering. Whatever it is my topic is about different types of cover/
wrapper /container. Some nostalgic memories are there in this posting in
addition to some general information. *

*Gopalakrishnan 12-11-2023.*

*1. Wax paper covering.*

*Many of the products today available in stores are having beautiful covers
today. Examples are biscuit covers and toilet soap covers. During my
boyhood days soaps like lifebuoy and Sunlight had very thin wrapper with
waxed paper and it was difficult to peel it out as a single piece. The
washing soaps too had such covers. Not much importance was given to beauty
of such covers. *

*Earlier some biscuit packs had tight thin covering. And they were packed
in half/full tins and delivered to shops. These half tins were very much in
demand and purchased from shops and used in homes to keep rice/ sugar etc. *

*Bar soaps had thin printed covering. When detergent bars appeared they too
had though beautifully printed thin waxed paper covering. Now too they
appear so. Use of detergent bar is still there in homes to remove tough
stains in collars before putting in washing machine or with those not able
to afford a washing machine. In villages the sales is more comparing to
cities and towns.*

*Now ginger candy and groundnut candy comes in plastic transparent thin
foils wrapped around them. There must be some reason, especially for ginger
candy wrapping in that method. On search result I could get is it is tight
wrapping, not to get affected by weather conditions. However when I go to
purchase ginger candy, I ask the shop worker to give the latest arrival. In
supermarkets, they become hard sometimes even with air-conditioning.
Groundnut candy is also available as pieces loosely packed in plastic
covers. *

*2. Attractive foil and thick paper covering.*

*Now most biscuits come in attractive aluminium foil covering. Some special
biscuits, cream biscuits, have in addition special inside foil packing.
There is stiff competition in the biscuit production field, and one of the
few items we get at very low price is biscuits. With hard board outer
containers though the biscuit are tightly packed in cover, it is a luck a
person gets normal biscuits without breaking at least in the ends. Those
with inner foils breakage are slightly less. Wafers have inner foils and
outer cover and their prices are very high. I made a Google search for the
higher price of wafers-Wafers, unlike other biscuits, are produced from a
very fluid batter which is baked between heavy hot plates to produce thin
sheets. Wafer offers a unique textural eating experience. The crispness and
lightness blend admirably with soft cream or chocolate.*

*Why are wafers so expensive? It's merely due to the amount of work, care,
and time needed to create them. Wafers have to be as perfect as possible
and reaching that involves a very complex and detailed process. *

*Sweet shops.*

*Invariably sweet shops pack them with thin foil paper, and place them in
carton/plastic box and deliver to us. This includes the sweet packs from
supermarkets also. *

*I read elsewhere the sweets are weighed after placing them in foil and
carton/plastic shops, and making charges of them are very less comparing to
the weight of sweet of equivalent weight. *

*Higher profit*

*Recently I purchased insulin and other capsules from a nearby medical
shop. I requested them to place in a plastic bottle if available instead of
paper packs. With a smile the person put in an empty plastic bottle. Just
like that I looked at the bottle after reaching home. On top it was written
additional 32 items of the marked contents are there. These 32 items sold
gives additional profit to the medical shops. Always an addition is given
for breakages and spills to the distributer. Let it be milk or oil or solid
items. Now many medicines in capsule/ tablet form are packed in plastic
THIN bottles. *

*Shops packing-a thing of the past?*

*Now most items come in packs of different quantities. These packs are very
attractive. To avoid spilling liquid items quality plastic covers are used.
Days of weighing and giving by shop worker is limited to very few items
comes in large bottles/bags. Quality cashews, dry grapes, cloves etc. are
packed and given in shops. Bleaching powder irrespective of the packing,
again packed and given. *

*Pouches*

*Liquid detergents come in quality pouches with tight screwing arrangement.
After purchasing we can transfer to old containers. Milk comes in pouches
now in India. Curd comes in pouches. *

*The same quality packing is there with Horlicks, Bonvitta etc. also in
cartons. A tight packing inside with foils and attractive cartons.*

*Medical shops and packing*

*Different medicines were packed in plastic covers earlier and now in paper
bags. Certain items like women’s pads are especially packed a 2nd time and
sold so that item will not be known to others.*

*Fruits and Vegetables*

*They are either supplied through thick bags or we can take in our bags. No
extra charging. But in super markets these thick bags are charged. Fruit
shops charge for the bags along with the price of such items. *
