Thank you.
Just one observation.
After covid, it is the CENTRAL GOVT which gives rice, wheat etc. FREE to the
lower strata of Society. The scheme has recently been extended for another few
years.
State Govts falsely claim credit and many are not even aware it is a Centrally
sponsored scheme.

LOWPRICED ITEMS

Respectedfriends,

Todaymorning after bath and worship in pooja room, I found a lot of match boxes
halfused. I rearranged match boxes to full and put emptied ones to waste box.
Matchbox is one of the few items priced low. I thought I may write on low
priceditems. A time passes readingonly.

Gopalakrishnan17-12-2023.

1. Matchboxes.

Irecollect even in my boyhood days my father purchased half a dozen match boxes
togetherfor a month. After keeping two near the holy nilavialakku, others were
kept ina shelf. Kitchen oven using fire wood required more match sticks to
ignite fireeven after adding small quantity of kerosene on fire wood. Most of
the monthsstill more were to be purchased. On those days, it was a medium
priced item. Eitherin provision shops or petty shops match boxes were sold as
pieces. Light woodwas used for sticks. Though wax applied paper sticks match
boxes appeared, theyvanished over the time. Now match boxes are mostly given as
a box and pricedaround 20 rupees for a dozen packs. Of all brands, Chaeta fight
appears best matchboxhaving match sticks a little more long. About safety match
boxes and earliermatch boxes I studied in middle school and later refreshed by
reading Wikipedia.

Whenmatch boxes were in demand, it was common to give match boxes to neighbours.

2. Salt

Duringmy college days also, only crystal type common salt was available. For
powdersalt, the clay is removed by washing and then boiled in a vessel adding
saltand water. All dusts appearing on top while boiling and finally all
waterexhausted, we got powder salt. Salt was also medium priced. Salt was kept
inlarge gunny bags outside shop and almost all times it was wet due to
oxidation.It was packed and given.

Nowtoo crystal salt is available in packs, but not having any dirt or
impurities. Differenttypes of powder salt are available. Mostly for cooking
also only powder salt isused nowadays. Whether salt is properly added in dishes
or not, now in mosthomes table salt pot is kept in dining table.  Now salt is
low priced and available in packsonly. Wetting salt bag has become a thing of
past.

Unlikematch boxes, salt is never given as loan or exchanged, especially in the
night. So all homes had reserve salt in the jar at all times.

3. Rice

There isa general notion that rice price is high, but comparing to many other
items, rice price is medium/ low.  Rice isstocked in most homes. Porridge with
rice and little salt added could relieve aperson from hunger.

Now inTamilnadu, through ration shops, free rice and wheat is given every
month. InKerala it is very low priced in ration shops.

Scarcityof rice is not there, in Tamilnadu and Kerala there are exclusive shops
sellingrice of different varieties priced differently.

At onetime there was scarcity around 1966’s, I recollect during my JE training
atTrivandrum only two handful of rice was served. We used to sit near
NorthIndian trainees who least wanted rice so that, we could get their
quantityalso. They preferred only Chapattis.

4 Vegetables

Duringproducing season many vegetables are available at low price comparing to
pricesof other items today. Similarly fruits. Two items priced very low now
inChennai are coconuts and plantains. Most plantains are priced the
same, available around Rs 60-00 per kg. Medium coconuts are priced around Rs
25-00only. These two items were priced high, plantains around Rs 120-00 per kg
andmedium coconut around Rs 60-00.

5 Paper and paperproducts.

Paper, note books, file covers, diaries, ball pen etc. are priced  medium
comparing to olden days. Lesser personswriting diaries, best diaries are
available around Rs 300-00. I recollectpaying Rs 250-00 for a diary during
2000’s.

6. Plasticitems ,textiles etc.

Plastic items arepriced very low comparing early years. If recycled plastic,
price is stilllesser, but still many products are worth and long standing.
Similarly cost ofmetals excluding gold.

Textiles arein abundance and within the reach of common man. For high price
payers thereare plenty of shops for them also.

Biscuitsare very very low priced  comparing to earlieryears.

7. Abundance

Comparingto earlier period abundance is worth mentioning. Standard of living
has muchhigher even to the lower strata.
