My dear Gopalakrishnan, I read, understand and then write giving all
references only; but you write as you walk over , without any head or tail
hence my question; did Giri speak about NABATI? NO; so many had written;
then you should write only to Giri ,if so one can understand or shall add
sub references so one can follow; that is why I asked you to explain. And
who said NABATI is low priced? And what was not good initially but became a
world market later? Many of you feel uncomfortable because you wish to
while away so do something;but I never get stumped because without
understanding I do not print. So you read your writing before releasing
whether reply or Q and A, apart from thank you sir quotes. Thank Gopala I
am not know-all; but some of you do not know anything basically, and so
caught squarely and become irritants. I know the basics. And it is not done
in a day as you need support from Gossips.

Free Foodgrains for 81.35 crore beneficiaries for five years: Cabinet
Decision

Historic decision for Food and Nutrition Security : Centre to spend approx.
Rs. 11.80 lakh crore in next 5 years on food subsidy under PMGKAY

PMGKAY: Amongst World’s largest Food Security Schemes for 81.35 crore
persons at an approx. cost of Rs. 11.80 lakh crore

Continuation of free foodgrains under PMGKAY for five years to strengthen
accessibility, affordability and availability of foodgrains for the poor
and the vulnerable
Posted On: 29 NOV 2023 2:28PM by PIB Delhi

The Cabinet led by Prime Minister has decided that the Central government
will provide free food grains to about 81.35 crore beneficiaries under the
Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) for a period of five years
with effect from 1st January, 2024.

This is a historic decision that places PMGKAY amongst the World’s biggest
social welfare schemes aimed at ensuring food and nutrition security for
81.35 crore persons, at an estimated cost of Rs. 11.80 lakh crore over a 5
year period.

The decision reflects the strong commitment of Hon. PM Shri Narendra Modi
towards efficient and targeted welfare through fulfilment of basic food and
nutrition requirements of the population. Ensuring food security at this
scale during Amrit Kaal would play a pivotal role in dedicating efforts
towards building an aspirational and developed India.

Free food grains (rice , wheat and coarse grains/millets) under PMGKAY for
5 years from 1.1.2024 will strengthen food security and mitigate any
financial hardship of the poor and vulnerable sections of the population.
It would provide Nation-wide uniformity in delivery of food grains free of
cost in all States/UTs through a network of over 5 lakh Fair Price Shops
under a common logo.

It will also enable ease of living, in terms of allowing beneficiaries to
lift free of cost food-grains from any fair price shop in the country under
the ONORC-One Nation One Ration Card- initiative. This initiative is of
enormous benefit for migrants, facilitating both intra and inter State
portability of entitlements as part of technology based reforms under
Digital India. The free food grains will concurrently ensure uniform
implementation of portability under One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC)
across the country and will further strengthen this choice-based platform.

The approximate food subsidy for five years for distribution of food grains
under PMGKAY will be to the tune of Rs. 11.80 lakh crore. Thus, the Centre
will spend approx. Rs. 11.80 lakh crore during the period of next five
years as food subsidy under PMGKAY, to provide free food grains to the
targeted population.

The provision of free food grains under PMGKAY for five years with effect
from 1st January 2024 reflects the long-term commitment and vision of Hon.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for addressing National food and
nutrition security. Provision of free food grains shall mitigate any
financial hardship of the affected strata of society in a sustainable
manner and ensure long term pricing strategy with zero cost to the
beneficiaries which is vital for effective penetration of the Public
Distribution System.

As an example, the economic cost of 35 kg rice for an Antyodaya family
comes to Rs. 1371, while the cost of 35 kg wheat comes to Rs. 946, which is
being borne by GOI under PMGKAY, and the foodgrains are provided completely
free to the families. Thus, the monthly savings of ration card holders are
significant, on account of the free foodgrains.

Government of India has a commitment to the people of the nation - a
dignified life by ensuring them access to food and nutritional security
through availability of adequate quantity of quality food grains. The
Scheme will contribute to fulfilling of Government of India commitment to
81.35 crore persons covered under PMGKAY.

Keeping in view welfare of the beneficiaries and in order to strengthen the
food security in terms of accessibility, affordability and availability of
food grains for the targeted population, and to maintain uniformity across
the States, the decision has been taken to continue providing food grains,
free of cost, under PMGKAY for five years.

This is a historic decision that reflects the dedication and commitment of
the Hon. Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, towards strengthening
food and nutrition security in the Country. KR IRS 171223

Thank you.

Just one observation.

After covid, it is the CENTRAL GOVT which gives rice, wheat etc. FREE to
the lower strata of Society. The scheme has recently been extended for
another few years.

State Govts falsely claim credit and many are not even aware it is a
Centrally sponsored scheme.

LOW PRICED ITEMS

Respected friends,

Today morning after bath and worship in pooja room, I found a lot of match
boxes half used. I rearranged match boxes to full and put emptied ones to
waste box. Match box is one of the few items priced low. I thought I may
write on low priced items. A time passes reading only.

Gopalakrishnan 17-12-2023.

1. Match boxes.

I recollect even in my boyhood days my father purchased half a dozen match
boxes together for a month. After keeping two near the holy nilavialakku,
others were kept in a shelf. Kitchen oven using fire wood required more
match sticks to ignite fire even after adding small quantity of kerosene on
fire wood. Most of the months still more were to be purchased. On those
days, it was a medium priced item. Either in provision shops or petty shops
match boxes were sold as pieces. Light wood was used for sticks. Though wax
applied paper sticks match boxes appeared, they vanished over the time. Now
match boxes are mostly given as a box and priced around 20 rupees for a
dozen packs. Of all brands, Chaeta fight appears best matchbox having match
sticks a little more long. About safety match boxes and earlier match boxes
I studied in middle school and later refreshed by reading Wikipedia.

When match boxes were in demand, it was common to give match boxes to
neighbours.

2. Salt

During my college days also, only crystal type common salt was available.
For powder salt, the clay is removed by washing and then boiled in a vessel
adding salt and water. All dusts appearing on top while boiling and finally
all water exhausted, we got powder salt. Salt was also medium priced. Salt
was kept in large gunny bags outside shop and almost all times it was wet
due to oxidation. It was packed and given.

Now too crystal salt is available in packs, but not having any dirt or
impurities. Different types of powder salt are available. Mostly for
cooking also only powder salt is used nowadays. Whether salt is properly
added in dishes or not, now in most homes table salt pot is kept in dining
table. Now salt is low priced and available in packs only. Wetting salt
bag has become a thing of past.

Unlike match boxes, salt is never given as loan or exchanged, especially in
the night. So all homes had reserve salt in the jar at all times.

3. Rice

There is a general notion that rice price is high, but comparing to many
other items, rice price is medium/ low. Rice is stocked in most homes.
Porridge with rice and little salt added could relieve a person from
hunger.

Now in Tamilnadu, through ration shops, free rice and wheat is given every
month. In Kerala it is very low priced in ration shops.

Scarcity of rice is not there, in Tamilnadu and Kerala there are exclusive
shops selling rice of different varieties priced differently.

At one time there was scarcity around 1966’s, I recollect during my JE
training at Trivandrum only two handful of rice was served. We used to sit
near North Indian trainees who least wanted rice so that, we could get
their quantity also. They preferred only Chapattis.

4 Vegetables

During producing season many vegetables are available at low price
comparing to prices of other items today. Similarly fruits. Two items
priced very low now in Chennai are coconuts and plantains. Most plantains
are priced the same, available around Rs 60-00 per kg. Medium coconuts are
priced around Rs 25-00 only. These two items were priced high, plantains
around Rs 120-00 per kg and medium coconut around Rs 60-00.

5 Paper and paper products.

Paper, note books, file covers, diaries, ball pen etc. are priced medium
comparing to olden days. Lesser persons writing diaries, best diaries are
available around Rs 300-00. I recollect paying Rs 250-00 for a diary during
2000’s.

6. Plastic items ,textiles etc.

Plastic items are priced very low comparing early years. If recycled
plastic, price is still lesser, but still many products are worth and long
standing. Similarly cost of metals excluding gold.

Textiles are in abundance and within the reach of common man. For high
price payers there are plenty of shops for them also.

Biscuits are very very low priced comparing to earlier years.

7. Abundance

Comparing to earlier period abundance is worth mentioning. Standard of
living has much higher even to the lower strata.
