RespectedSir/s,
SUBJECT: Railwaysdeploy close to 20,000 FOGPASS devices for smooth train run.
Introducedin 2018, Fog PASS is a hand-held portable device given to the
loco-pilots forassistance in navigating dense fog conditions.
FOG shows up when water vapour, or water in its gaseous
form, condenses. During condensation, molecules of water vapour combine tomake
tiny liquid water droplets that hang in the air. One can see fog because of
these tiny waterdroplets. Water vapour, a gas, is invisible.
Inthe interest of safety of passengers, Indian Railways have
to resort to therescheduling/cancellation of trains due to foggy weather
conditions in NorthernParts of the country.
FogPASS Device is a Global Positioning System (GPS) based hand held portable
devicewhich serves as an aid for the crew during foggy weather through audio
visualalarm, whenever any landmark comes within theGeo-fence range. Location
ofstations, warning boards, signals, level crossing gates and Whistle for
Levelcrossing (W/L) boards in the section is fed in the equipment. Itdisplays
speed of the locomotive, distance and time to reach landmarks and iscarried by
the Loco Pilots. These arebeing used only in those zones of Indian Railways
where the trains pass throughfog affected region.
Around19,700 GPS-based navigation devices, known as Fog PASS,
are helping loco pilotsoperate trains with minimal disruptions and delay while
ensuring safety ofpassengers, railways sources said. Officials say that as fog
has begun toaffect the visibility in the morning hours, these devices are
coming in handyin the smooth running of trains.
"Every year Railways increase procurementin order to
have enough stock of the device to use in times of need. In March2021, Rlys had
around 12,742 Fog PASS devices,
"As the numbers of trains areincreasing with the introduction of new
trains; this has become a necessity.
The device gives them on-board real-time information
(display as well asvoice-guidance) regarding location of fixed landmarks such
as signal, levelcrossing gate (manned & unmanned), permanent speed
restrictions, neutralsections etc.
"It displays approach indications of the nextthree approaching fixed
landmarks in geographical order accompanied with avoice message at 500 metre on
approach. Route survey for collecting theGPS/GNSS coordinates of landmarks is
required to be carried out separately& programmed. The device also shows the
speed of the locomotive, distanceand time to reach landmarks and is carried by
the Loco Pilots. These are beingused only in those zones of Indian Railways,
where the trains pass through fogaffected regions.
SystemOverview
It is a low-cost,portable equipment to be carried
by Loco Pilot to the locomotive while taking overduty-charge.
Itprovides on-board real-time information (Display as well as
Voiceguidance) to Loco Pilot regarding Location of fixed
Landmarkssuch as Signal, Level Crossing gate (Manned &
Unmanned),Permanent Speed Restrictions, Neutral Sections etc.
wherethe Loco Pilot’s attention is required. It prevents the driver from
disorientationdue to dense fog.
General features of FogPASS
Suitablefor all types of sections like single line, double line,
electrifiedas well as non-electrified sections.
Suitablefor all types of electric and diesel locomotives,
EMUs/MEMUs/DEMUs.
Suitablefor train speeds up to 160 KMPH.
EachFogPASS unit can store events essential for diagnostic purpose for a period
of15 days.
Ithas built-in re-chargeable battery back-up for18 hrs.
Itis portable, compact in size, light in weight (not more than
1.5Kg including battery) and of robust design.
LocoPilot can carry the device easily with him to the
locomotiveon resuming his duty. It can be easily placed on the cab desk of
locomotive. Itis a standalone system.
Itis unaffected by weather conditions like Fog, Rain or
Sunshine.
FogPASS is an intelligent system havingGPS/GNSS receiver
with small antenna, which detects location of the locomotive whenkept in the
locomotive and continuously calculate the distance remaining to thenext
landmark(s) already loaded in the system by the user railway. The unit is
capable of detectingits location correctly + 10 meter if switched on anywhere
on the track forwhich the route data is already programmed in the unit and after
movement, it correctly displays the approaching landmark
on the LCD screen.
GPS/GNSS co-ordinates of all Landmarks as identified by the
user along with their short description & location are fed to
FogPASS which is programmable.
The GPS co-ordinates shall be collected by carrying out route
survey of the section separately.
TheFogPASS unit is capable of storing multiple route data in
Itsmemory. The system software enables the driver to easily select amongthe
loaded routes using the key pad. The display module of the FogPASS unit is
swivellingtype for adjusting the direction for best viewing by the Loco Pilot
according tothe requirement.Thelanguage of display as well as announcement
shall be English only. Itis possible to change/add/edit the route data by
reprogramming the system witha new route data to make the Unitsuitable for a
new section. This is protected by a password.-----
