Q1             Whycan't planes land with a full tank of fuel? Why do some
airplanes have to dumpfuel before landing?

A1             RebeccaWilliams, Aviation lover.2h

The main reason why planes can’t land with a full tankof fuel is because ofthe
weight limit.

Every airplane has a maximum take off weight (MTOW) and amaximum landing weight
(MLW), which are determined by the design and structureof the aircraft.

The MTOW is the maximum weight that an airplane cansafely lift off the ground,
while the MLW is the maximum weight that anairplane can safely touch down on
the ground.

The MLW is usually lower than the MTOW because landing ismore stressful on the
airplane than taking off.

Landing with a heavy weight can cause structural damageto the airplane, such as
bending the wings, cracking the fuselage, or breakingthe landing gear.

The amount of fuel that an airplane carries is asignificant factor that affects
its weight. Fuel is heavy, weighing up to 6pounds per gallon. A typical
commercial airplane can carry tens of thousands ofgallons of fuel, which can
add up to hundreds of thousands of pounds of weight. For example, a Boeing 777
can carry up to 47,890 gallons of fuel, which weighsabout 287,340 pounds. An
airplane that takes off with a full tank of fuel willbe much heavier than an
airplane that lands with an empty tank of fuel.

To avoid landing with a full tank of fuel, pilots andflight planners calculate
the amount of fuel that is needed for the flight, based on factors such as
distance, weather, payload, and reserves.

The goal is to burn enough fuel during the flight so thatthe airplane’s weight
will be below the MLW by the time it lands.

But, sometimesthings don’t go as planned, and an airplane may have to land
sooner than expected, before it hasburned enough fuel. This can happen due to
emergencies, such asmechanical problems, medical issues, or security threats.
In such cases, theairplane may be too heavy to land safely, and it may have to
get rid of some ofthe excess fuel. This iswhere fuel dumping comes in.

Fuel dumping is a procedure that allows an airplane torelease some of its fuel
into the air, reducingits weight and allowing it to land safely. This is usually
done by largerairplanes that can do so, such as the Boeing 777, the Airbus
A380, or theLockheed C-5 Galaxy. Smaller airplanes that do not have the fuel
dumpingcapability have to either land overweight or fly around until they burn
enoughfuel.

Fuel dumping is not a common occurrence, and it is onlydone when necessary,
following specific protocols and procedures.

Air traffic controllers advise the pilots of the bestlocation and altitude to
dump fuel, where there are fewer people and lessenvironmental impact.

Pilots also try to dump fuel at a high altitude, where thefuel can evaporate
and disperse before reaching the ground.

The amount of fuel that is dumped depends on thesituation, but it can range
from a few thousand to tens of thousands ofgallons.

My note- Aninformative QA.

Q2             Aregreat apes the only large vertebrates with no tail?

A2             ClaireJordan, Worked at National Health Service (NHS)14h

Well, bearsand some large breeds of dogs have very short tails, just a brief
stub, and so do ostriches, emus, rheas and cassowaries (all fairly big) and
theextinct moa and elephant bird(very big). Capybaras are fairly big - about
medium sheep-size - andhave no tail.

Frogs and kiwishave no tail, but have never been all that big. I’m not sure if
any of the really bigextinct amphibians were tailless.

The sunfish ormola is very big and it doesn’t exactly have a tail:
