பண்புடையார்ப் பட்டுண்டு உலகம் அதுஇன்றேல்
மண்புக்கு மாய்வது மன்.
(குறள் 996: பண்புடைமை அதிகாரம்)
பண்புடையார்ப் பட்டு – பண்புடையாரை சார்பாகக் கொண்டு
உண்டு உலகம் – இவ்வுலகம் உளதாய் இருக்கிறது
அது இன்றேல் – அப்பண்புடைமை இல்லாமல் போனால்
மண் புக்கு – மண்ணோடு மண்ணாகிப் போய்
மாய்வது – மடிந்து விடும்
மன் – இவ்வுலகே, மனித குலமே
பண்புடமையாகிய பிறரோடு இணங்கும் பண்பு இருத்தலால், அத்தகையாரைச் சார்பாகக்
கொண்டே இவ்வுலகமானது இயங்குகிறது. அப்பண்பு இல்லையாயின், பண்புடையோரே
இல்லாதொழியின், உலகம் சார்ந்து நிற்க ஏதுமின்றி, மண்ணோடு மண்ணாகி மடிந்து,
அழிவுறும்; மனித குலமும் அழியும்.
கீழ் காணும் புறநானூற்றுப் பாடலில் (புறம்: 182) இளம் பெரும்வழுதி என்னும்
புலவர் இக்கருத்தை இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறார்:
உண்டால் அம்ம, இவ்வுலகம், இந்திரர்,
அமிழ்தம் இயைவதாயினும், இனிது எனத்
தமியர் உண்டலும் இலரே. முனிவிலர்
துஞ்சலும் இலர், பிறர் அஞ்சுவது அஞ்சிப்
புகழ் எனின், உயிரும் கொடுக்குவர், பழியெனின்
உலகுடன் பெறினும், கொள்ளலர்; அயர்விலர்;
அன்ன மாட்சி அனைய ராகித்,
தமக்கென முயலா நோன்தாள்,
பிறர்க்கென முயலுநர் உண்மையானே
இப்பாடலின் பொருள்: தேவர் உலகத்தில் வாழ்பவர்கள் இந்திரர்கள். இவர்கள் உண்ணும்
உணவு அமிழ்தம். இந்த அமிழ்தத்தை உண்ணுவதாலேயே இவர்களுக்குச் சாவு இல்லை.
இத்தகைய சிறப்பு வாய்ந்த அமிழ்தமே கிடைத்தாலும், சுயநலத்துடன் தாம் மட்டும்
உண்ண மாட்டார்கள். எந்தச் சூழலிலும் சினம் கொள்ளமாட்டார்கள். பிறருக்கு நன்மை
செய்வார்கள். பழியான ஒன்றைச் செய்வதற்கு உலகமே பரிசாகக் கிடைத்தாலும் பழியான
செயல்களைச் செய்ய மாட்டார்கள். இவ்வாறு பிறருக்காக வாழும் பொதுநலம் படைத்தோர்
இருப்பதால்தான் இந்த உலகம் வாழ்கிறது. பண்புடையாரைக் கொண்டே இவ்வுலகம்
வாழ்கிறது என்று சங்க இலக்கியப் பாடலும் வலியுறுத்துகிறது.
“நல்லார் ஒருவர் உளரேல் அவர்பொருட்டு
எல்லோர்க்கும் பெய்யும் மழை”
என்ற ஒளவையாரின் “மூதுரைப்” பாடல் வரிகளின் உள்ளுரைக் கருத்தும் இதேயாம்.
இக்குறள் நம்பிக்கையை இழக்காமல், ஒருவர் பண்புடையாராக இருப்பினும் மழையாவது
பொழியும், உயிர்கள் தழைக்கும் என்பதைச் சுட்டிக்காட்டுகிறது. மழையின்றி,
மன்னுயிர் ஏது? மன்னுயிரின்றி இவ்வுலகம்தான் நிலை பெறுதல் எங்கனம்.?
Transliteration:
paNbuDaiyArp paTTuNDu ulagam athuinREl
maNpukku mAivadu man
paNbuDaiyArp paTTu – because of courteous and virtuous people
uNDu ulagam – This world exists as it is
athu inREl – if the courtesy and character are lost in people
maN pukku – buried in sand
mAivadu – will die
man – this earth and the lives on this earth
Because of people of character and curtesy this world still exists and
carries lives. Devoid of that, the world shall perish as dust and buried
under mud with no life in it.
In a poem of PuranAnURu (182), poet iLam perumvazhudi, has said the same in
a poem “unDAlamma ivvulagam”;
Those who live in the abode of celestials are Indras; their food is
life-sustaining nectar. They never die or perish because of the nectar.
People of character shall never eat even that selfishly consuming all for
self-sustenance. They would never be irate; would always intend and do good
to others. Would shy away from blameful deeds, even if the have great
benefits. Because of such noble souls, this world lives says that verse.
Another verse in AuvayyArs’ “mUdurai” has the lines expressing a similar
thought: “nallAr oruvar uLarEl avarporuTTu ellOrkkum peyyum mazhai”.
vaLLuvar shows his faith in at least one person having the character saving
the world with rains. After all without rains where would life be on this
earth? Without life on this earth what would it be? – A perished place!
Because of the courteous, the world sustains
Devoid of that it perishes to dust and drains”

*I studied at a boarding school in Iran’s capital, Tehran. My father was
forever on the move, and I didn’t have any siblings or relatives around.
During the vacation, especially in the month of Ramzan, most of the inmates
preferred to go home to observe roza and the school would declare holidays
so that the children could be with their parents in the holy month.*
*Iran is predominantly a Shia country; its religious rules are slightly
relaxed compared to those of its neighbour, Iraq. My stay at the boarding
school during Ramzan was never an issue for the management or the warden.
Moreover, my father requested the school authorities not to impose Islamic
traditions on me, as I had no faith in any god or religion. I was the only
non-Muslim, rather atheist, student there. *
*During Ramzan, a Muslim is not supposed to eat during the daytime, and
he/she breaks the fast (roza) only in the evening. Yet, never did I go
without food. The school management as well as the relatives of some
inmates would bring fresh vegetarian food for me despite their roza. I
spent seven years in that Iranian school and never experienced any problem
regarding food during the month of Ramzan. No one even remotely suggested
that I, a vegetarian, should eat meat. *
*The hostel management prepared vegetarian food for me till the time I left
the place to pursue higher studies in the UK. Not only that, I would get
Eidee (gifts) from my Muslim friends on the occasion of Eid. I would wear
gifted clothes and visit my friends’ place for relishing sheer khurma. My
Iranian Muslim friends were aware of my sweet tooth. They would stuff me
with all kinds of sweets. *
*In these times, when Hindus and Muslims are at loggerheads and fanaticism
is on the rise across the globe, such heart-warming experiences serve as a
beacon of hope for the beleaguered humankind. I remember the goodness of
those people with tears in my eyes and recall English poet Robert Southey’s
immortal lines: ‘And while I understand and feel/ How much to them I owe/
My cheeks have often been bedew’d/With tears of thoughtful gratitude.’ We
still have angels amidst us. All is certainly not lost for humanity.*
