Q1                 Whatadvice would you give to a 1st year MBBS student?

A1                 Varun Singla,Medical Student atPt. B.D. Sharma PGIMS Rohtak
(2020–present)Nov 20

Congratulationson your admission to the MBBS program! Your dedication and hard
work have ledyou to this significant achievement

First-yearMBBS students often face challenges such as adjusting to the rigorous
academicload, adapting to a new learning environment, and managing time
effectively.Anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry courses can be particularly
demanding.Additionally, students may find it challenging to strike a balance
betweenstudies and self-care.

1- self care- this is the most impressive thing for a freshie in a med school.

Medical cld isa entirely new environment with new syllabus mew and difficult
terms and manymore things

Firstly tryto adjust yourself in that environment.

Make newfriends, try to understand the terms , clg environment.

This is themost important thing you should do after entering into med school.

Now thereare three new subjects in your first year.

A) anatomy -having entirely new syllabus, new terms that you haven't studied yet
in yourhigh school.

This is thedifficult subject for most of the students

For coveringthis you should prefer some online platforms like

*Manipalmedace* having experts like Dr. Tejaswi .

His lecturesof anatomy are filled with immense knowledge and conceptual
clearity that isgoing to be very helpful for you ..

Physiology -this subject have some similarities with our earlier subjects of
high schoolbut as this is a med school there are more details then we studied
yet .

Some topicsare like that you need conceptual clarity otherwise you will not be
able toovercome that topic nor the subject.

I personallyprefer you lectures of dr.abirami (Manipal medace)

Her lecturesare absolutely amazing leaving no concepts behind and complete
syllabuscoverage.

Biochemistry- again this subject also has similarity but learning cycles and
intermediatesand enzymes as well in this subject are quite hectic

Dr.Meenakshi (Manipal medace) lectures are very beneficial for this subjects

These arethe three basic subjects of med school which are foundation of entire
MBBS.

I personallypreferred manipal medace for all the three subjects.

1-Manipalmedace live dissection videos for anatomy offers close to real human
bodyexploration enhancing surgical knowledge and skills

2- 3Dinteractive modules are provided by manipal medace ,helps in more
comprehensivestudy of human body

3- livetutorial of all chapters and live doubt session after test series where
you canconnect directly with experts and clear all your doubts

Focus onbuilding a strong foundation in yiur basic medical science with the
help ofmanipal medace

Q2         DoBrahmins still hold a belief in their superiority over others, or
have theyembraced equality as stated in our constitution?

A2          Subrahmanyam Marripudi, Telugu BrahminVegetarian Lacto-2h

A Brahminhere.

Brahmins area 4,000-year-old caste. Our Constitution was written and came into
force just73 years ago. ThisConstitution became applicable to our country only
after it received the royalsignature and the official stamp of a Brahmin.

The word‘equality’ was used in the Constitution only a few times. But otherwise
it isfull of the sections and articles which ask us to apply different
standards fordifferent people in the country.

Brahmins arenot superior to anyone. They never felt like that because they
always knew thefact that certain other castes fare far better than themselves
in physicalstrength, hard work, bravery and earning capacity and worldly
wisdom/street-smartness. However, they don’t envy anyone because they are fully
awarethat they were prepared by God for a very different mission and that they
arenot supposed to imitate the mission assigned to other castes.

True, theBrahmin caste was not born great, but became one of the great
communities ofthe world by dint of their hard work in the course of several
millennia. Theyhad very humble origins and always lived very simple. They are
conscious ofthis background pretty well.

Brahmins were originally not a profession-basedcaste but a forest tribe, the
men and women of which used to do tapasya, yajnasand homas in the loneliness of
woods, leading very simple, minimalistic autonomous lives in their mud huts,
wearinganimal skins/ flaxen garments and subsisting on roots and fruits only.
Theyused to read and write saastras and kaavyas there, teaching the same to
theirchildren and disciples.

That’s why avery ancient body of India’s literature is called Aaranyakas
(forest books) orthe books written in aranyas (forests).

While in theforest, they also used to do research on the subjects like grammar,
music, dance, Ayurveda, astrology etc. That’s why even now, Brahmin male kids
weardeer skin (or at least a tiny piece of it) in the upanayanam ceremony, as
afaint reminder of their remote roots, their original forest life, their
tribalway of life once upon a time. Reverence for cowdung, choice of fruits
forfasting and the preference for the use of wooden articles - these things
arethe other still-surviving remnants of the tribal culture of the forest
Brahminsof the ancient.

Theyreluctantly stepped in cities, towns and villages when the kings of
Indiarequested them to arrive and take residence there - for the sake of
beingeasily available to themselves and for teaching and enlightening the
masses. Toattract the Brahmin immigration, the kings offered them a wide range
of sopslike liberal donations of land, houses, jobs, and gold. This
internalimmigration process had not happened in a day, but over several
centuries.

Brahmins had finally abandoned their forest abodesand settled in the towns and
villages. But they could never fully integrate in the civilised society full
ofnon-Brahmins. They deeply hated many things which are deemed to be
commonplacein the civilized world. They were unable to digest its multifarious
andmultiple vices and adjust with them. They looked for the ways and means
toinsulate themselves and avoid the impurities of the urban life and remain
asuntainted as they were while in the woods. Thus was born the idea to
constructagrahaarams, the colonies exclusively for the Brahmin dwelling. The
kingsgraciously acquiesced to the proposal and donated the requisite land
andmaterial for the purpose.

Even now, most Brahmins are unable to digest and approve of the trends of the
civilizedworld.

As ancientBrahmins maintained such distance, the rest of the society understood
it astheir superiority complex. The reality is - urban life is incompatible
with theideal Brahmin life. Yet, if most Brahmins today are urbanites, it is
becausethere is no other go and also because they compromise on a few Brahmin
thingsto fit in that life.

Everycommunity has its own merits and demerits. Similarly Brahmins have them
too.

Brahmin boysand girls are generally raised in a God-fearing and sin-hating
atmosphere.

They aretaught the subtleties and values of the purity of mind and body.

Brahminsusually love education for education’s sake and subjects for subjects’
sake, but not with an eye on money. They are taught to value education and
knowledgeabove everything else.

They aremore patient and tolerant ones.

As a result, they are more thinking, more reasonable and logical. They excercise
utmostrestraint and get highly choosy with words, while disagreeing with
others. Theydon’t stray away from the original topics and resort to personal
abuses.

They arenon-violent. So they will just silently avoid you if they hate you.
They don’tharbour long-term grudges and lie in the waiting for catching an
opportunity tobite you back. They are quick to forgive and forget any negative
thing.

Therefore, alarge number of them are vegetarians who avoid visiting the houses
andcelebrations of non-vegetarians for fear of eating off the plates/ vessels
usedfor non-veg food. This abstention has given rise to a propaganda that they
feelsuperior and hate and despise othee castes.

Brahmins arenot interested in making money. That’s the basic reason why there
are not thelikes of Ambanis and Adanis in this caste, in spite of being the
most educatedgroup with several in the highest posts from it.

Bytemperament, Brahmins are a caste of philosophers and deep thinkers wishing
tobe left alone, preferring loneliness over gregariousness. This thing has
alsogiven rise to the propaganda about their superiority complex.

Brahmins’unique distinction is - that they are simply irreplaceable people.
There is noalternative to them. If fighters go away, another group of fighters
will arriveon the scene. If a business commuity dies, another such community
will appearvery soon. However, if the Brahmin community goes extinct, there
will be noother community daring to don their mantle on a full scale.

Q3         Giveme a joke?

A3          Mary Krupka, Mar 23

Here’s aJewish mama joke.

A Jewishmother picks up the phone to hear the sound of a woman gulping sobs.
Herdaughter! “Darling! What’s the matter?

Woman:” Oh,Mama!Oh,Mama!”

“Yes darling. Mama is here. What’s wrong?”

“We’re snowed in. The car won’t start. Therefrigerator stopped working and all
the food is spoiled. The kids have coldsand the house is a mess. I have a
headache. And twenty ladies from my Hadassahchapter are coming for lunch at one
o’clock! Oh,Mama” she wails “What am Igoing to do?”

In a calmsoothing voice Mama replies “Don’t worry darling, Mama is here. First
I’ll godown to the grocery and pick up something to eat. Then I’ll take the
subway. And from the subway I’ll walk the sixteen blocks to your house. I’ll
cooksomething for the twenty ladies, they’ll love it. I’ll give the kids an
aspirinso they’ll be quiet. I’ll tell them a story till they fall asleep so you
canlie down too. While the food cooks I'll pick up the house. Everything will
beall right. Don’t worry darling,Mama is here! That’s what a mother is for!”

The womangives a huge sigh of relief. “Oh,Mama thank you! I feel so much
better.”

“Don’t mention it, darling” Then, in an everydayvoice “If you’re snowed in and
the car won’t start how did Sam get to work?”

 (Puzzled voice) “Sam? Who’s Sam?”

(Mama impatiently) “Sam! Your husband Sam! Howdid he get to work?”

Longpregnant pause. Then in a small voice the woman says “My husband's name
isSaul”

Anotherpregnant pause . Then in a trembling voice the woman says:

 “Does that mean…you’re… not coming?”

Q4                 Whycan't we transplant other animals’ eyes into humans and
gain the benefits oftheir eyes?

A4                 Ken Saladin,Former professor ofhistology (microscopic
anatomy)Mar 15

Wecan’t even transplant a human eye into another person and restore vision. It’s
not yet possible to establish the necessary nerve connections to the brainto
make it functional, and the recipient’s immune system would set out todestroy
it anyway. That would necessitate a lifelong regimen ofimmunosuppressant drugs,
which cost a lot of money and reduce the quality oflife in other ways.

If we ignorethose “minor technicalities,” though, and assume someother animal’s
eyes were transplanted into a human, the human brain wouldn’tknow how to
interpret the incoming signals from them. The result would not be auseful image.

You shouldbear in mind, also, that other animals’ eyes are not necessarily
better thanours. You may think a hawk or eagle has better eyes than humans
because it cansee a mouse or rabbit from a great distance. However, their
vision is worsethan ours in other respects such as peripheral vision. You might
envy someanimals their night vision, but what enables them to see better than
us in dimlight also makes their vision in daylight much worse than ours. If you
had thefeatures that are responsible for the vision of an eagle or a cat, you
wouldn’tbe able to read a book or drive a car anymore. Personally, I won’t
considersuch a cost worth it just to be able to see better at night or see a
rabbit amile away.

In short, even if your hypothetical transplant experiment were a success, you’d
probablylose qualities of human vision that we value without thinking much
about them.

I’ve studiedanimal eyes for a long time through courses, advanced seminars,
personal labresearch, and teaching—so I’ve paid more attention to the diversity
of animaleyes and vision than I have to most other areas of biology—but I can’t
think ofa single species whose eyes would be superior to ours at meeting the
needs offunctional and enjoyable human existence.

Q5                 Whatanimal or object was surprisingly bigger/smaller than
you thought?

A5                 Peter Wade-M.S. in Mathematicsfrom The University of
Tennessee Updated 1y

Surprisingly large object

When I firstvisited the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, the height was
staggering towitness in person considering this structure was built almost
5,000 years agowith none of our modern technology. But the base level alone was
much tallerthan I thought it would be. You can look at photographs all day long
and seelayer after layer of stone stacked on top of each other. But when you
actuallystand next to the pyramids and see that the base layer of stones are
nearlyfive feet (1.5 m) in height, that’s when you truly grasp how
shockinglydifficult it was to build those pyramids.

Surprisingly large animals

Candidate 1- The hyena

First, consider the English Mastiff, the largest breed of dog (pictured below).

Theseenormous canines average a height of 30 inches (76 cm) at the shoulders
andabout 50 inches (127 cm) in length.

But thespotted hyena grows up to 36 inches (91 cm) tall and 65 inches (165 cm)
long, far bigger than most would assume. Just compare it to the English
Mastiffbelow.

They seemsmaller, perhaps because we often see them juxtaposed with huge lions
andbuffalo.

Candidate 2 - The walrus

The biggestenemies of the walrus are polar bears and killer whales. A polar
bear is huge,a full foot taller than the infamous grizzly bear.

A largepolar bear can be up to five feet (1.5 m) tall at the shoulders, and
muchtaller when they stand up.

They havemassive paws for taking down prey.

But then yousee the polar bear next to a walrus, a giant animal that can be up
to 12 feetlong (3.7 m). It exceeds the length of a polar bear by at least 25%
and caneven be double the length of an adult polar bear!

It makes youwonder how a polar bear can be bold enough to attack such an
enormous creature(although unsuccessfully), even killing juvenile walruses that
are equal to thepolar bear in size.
