Verse 1.159 Taitriya upanishad Book 1 sikshavalli

पावनोऽस्य जपः श्रेयान् ब्रह्मज्ञानस्य जन्मने ।
मुमुक्षुः प्रयतस्तस्माज्जपेदेतत्समाहितः ॥ १५९ ॥

pāvano'sya japaḥ śreyān brahmajñānasya janmane |
mumukṣuḥ prayatastasmājjapedetatsamāhitaḥ || 159 ||

The recitation of this sacred *mantra
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/mantra#history>* is the most
excellent means to the rise of Brahman
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/brahman#history>-knowledge. Hence, a
person who seeks liberation should recite it by remaining pure and with a
concentrated mind. This idea (viz., that this *mantra* is for recitation)
is arrived at, since it is stated in the context of *karma
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/karma#vedanta>*.
Verse 1.160

karmaprasaṅga uktatvādayamartho'vasīyate |
mumukṣostatparasyaivaṃ śrautasmārteṣu karmasu |
ārṣaṃ ca prātibhaṃ jñānamāvirbhavati mokṣadam || 160 ||

The intuitive knowledge of the real which leads to liberation dawns upon
the spiritual aspirant who performs the rites as enjoined in *śruti
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/shruti#vedanta>* and *smṛti* texts
for the sake of the Lord.

It should not be thought
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/thinking#vedanta> that the recitation
of the *mantra <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/mantra#history>* alone
leads to Brahman
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/brahman#history>-knowledge.
All Scripture-ordained duties which are performed for the sake of *Īśvara
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/ishvara#vedanta>* as an offering to
Him and not for the sake of any immediate fruit are conducive to the
attainment of Brahman-knowledge through *citta
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/citta#history>-śuddhi*. K Rajaram
