SOLAR ECLIPSE
A partial solar eclipse is set to take place on Saturday, March 29, marking
the first solar eclipse of 2025. The event occurs when the Moon moves
between the Earth and the Sun, partially blocking sunlight and casting a
shadow on parts of the Earth. According to NASA, the eclipse will be
visible across regions of Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South
America, and the Arctic. The eclipse will be visible in several regions,
including New York City, Boston, Montreal, and Quebec. Other parts of
Africa, Siberia, the Caribbean, and Europe will also experience a partial
eclipse. In the United States, the eclipse will begin at approximately 4:50
am EDT, peak at 6:47 am EDT, and conclude at 8:43 am EDT. In India, the
event will technically start at 2:20 pm IST, peak at 4:17 pm IST, and end
at 6:13 pm IST. However, due to the alignment and time difference, the
eclipse.
The Rig Veda, an ancient Hindu text, contains what is believed to be
the earliest known reference to a total solar eclipse, dating back
approximately 6,000 years.
Oldest Reference:
Astronomers studying the Rig Veda have identified a passage that they
believe refers to a total solar eclipse that occurred roughly 6,000 years
ago.
"Atri's Eclipse":
This reference is often referred to as "Atri's Eclipse" and is associated
with the sage Atri, who is said to have liberated the Sun from the eclipse
by vanquishing the demon Swar Bhanu.
Timeframe:
The eclipse is believed to have occurred around 4202 BC or 3811 BC, based
on astronomical calculations and the Rig Veda's descriptions.
Mythological Context:
The Rig Veda describes the eclipse as a time when the Sun was obscured by
the demon Swar Bhanu, causing fear among the people and gods. Atri, the
sage, is then depicted as saving the Sun.
Rigveda Verse:
Rig Veda 5.40.5 describes the eclipse as "O Surya, when the Asura's
descendant Svar Bhanu, pierced thee through and through with darkness, All
creatures looked like one who is bewildered, who knowest not the place
where he is standing."
Significance:
This discovery highlights the long-standing fascination with celestial
events and the valuable insights ancient texts can offer to modern
astronomy.

Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya
Svarbhānu: is personified ascending node, the causer of an eclipse; he was
a son of kashyapa, by Danu, the mother of the Dānavas or asuras; another
genitivealogy makes him the son of Vipraciti, by Siṃhikā, the sister of
Hiraṇyakaśipu. Svarbhānu is also identified by some as Rahu.

“When, Indra, you were dissipating those *illusions *of Svarbhānu which
were spread below the sun, then Atri, by his fourth sacred prayer,
discovered the sun concealed by the darkness impeding his functions.”
Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya

Indra maya an illusion of Rahu- means that poetically a name attributed

ancient people were aware of the cosmological factors but did not describe
as we do today.

*When astronomers combed through an ancient Hindu text known as the Rig
Veda, they discovered that it referenced a total solar eclipse that
occurred roughly 6,000 years ago — making it the oldest known mention of an
eclipse. The Rig Veda, a collection of sayings and hymns from various
religious and philosophical schools, was compiled LONG AGO. Like nearly all
religious texts, it mentions historical events. Most are contemporary to
when it was written, but some stretch back much further. For example,
various passages in the Rig Veda mention the location of the rising sun
during the vernal equinox. One reference describes the vernal equinox as
occurring in Orion, and another has it occurring in the Pleiades. These
descriptions allow astronomers to date those references, because as Earth
spins on its axis, it wobbles like a spinning top, changing the relative
position of important astronomical events. Currently, the vernal equinox is
in the constellation Pisces. It was in Orion around 4500 B.C. and in the
Pleiades around 2230 B.C., meaning the Rig Veda recorded some memories of
events far earlier than its compilation.*
*The Rig Veda's language is highly symbolic and allegorical, making it
difficult to discern which stories are myths and which are historical. But
two astronomers — Mayank Vahia of the Tata Institute of Fundamental
Research in Mumbai and Mitsuru Soma of the National Astronomical
Observatory of Japan — think they've found references to an ancient
eclipse. They reported their findings in the Journal of Astronomical
History and Heritage.*
*The passages are flowery but fitting for an eclipse, describing the sun as
being "pierced" with darkness and gloom and proposing that evil beings had
caused the sun's "magic arts to vanish." The astronomers noted that these
passages do not reference the story of Rahu and Ketu, which is a more
recent Hindu mythology surrounding the eclipse, indicating that these
passages were described before those stories were created.*
*Further passages helped the astronomers narrow down the time frame of the
solar eclipse. It occurred when the vernal equinox was in Orion, and it
also happened just three days prior to an autumnal equinox. It was also a
total solar eclipse, and it must have happened over the area where the
eventual writers of the Rig Veda lived. (SPACE.COM <http://SPACE.COM>)*
* So wisdom lie on us long ago and hence it shall click in us why
era marked by planets and stars in our literature do exhibit the dates more
accurately than west fear of our ancient predictions.*
