KAMBA NAYAM OR HIS VISION
Every poem of Kamban is chiseled; written in depth; similes were
excellent. And I chose this for 2 things; a good tamil knowing must
translate this as none of these words are used today. Secondly a bad
character but described by kamban so profoundly her beauty.
சூர்ப்பணகைப்படலம் 31
பஞ்சிஒளிர் விஞ்சுகுளிர் பல்லவம் அனுங்கச்
செஞ்செவிய கஞ்சம்நிகர் சீறடியள் ஆகி
அஞ்சொலிள மஞ்ஞைஎன அன்னம்என மின்னும்
வஞ்சிஎன *நஞ்சம்என* *வஞ்சமகள்* வந்தாள்.
கம்பனின் வார்த்தை விளையாட்டுக்கு கீழ் வரும் பாடல் ஒரு உதாரணம்.
தன் அரக்கி வடிவத்தை மறைத்து கொண்டு, அழகான பெண் போல உருக் கொண்டு சூர்பனகை
வருகிறாள்.
கம்பனின் பாட்டு கொஞ்சுகிறது.
பஞ்சி ஒளிர், விஞ்சு குளிர் பல்லவம் அனுங்க,
செஞ் செவிய கஞ்சம் நிகர், சீறடியள் ஆகி,
அம் சொல் இள மஞ்ஞை என, அன்னம் என, மின்னும்
வஞ்சி என, நஞ்சம் என, வஞ்ச மகள் வந்தாள்.
சூர்பனகையின் பாதம் நடந்து நடந்து வருந்துகிறது
அது எவ்வளவு மெல்லிய பாதம் தெரியுமா?
பஞ்சி = பஞ்சு போன்ற
ஒளிர் விஞ்சு குளிர் பல்லவம் அனுங்க = பல்லவம் அப்படினா [தளிர்.] அனுங்க
என்றால் வருந்த.
குளிர்ச்சியான தளிர்கள் வருந்தும் படி. ஒளி விட்டு விளங்கக்கூடிய ,
குளிர்ச்சியான தளிர்களை விட (விஞ்ச) மென்மையான பாதம் வருந்த
செஞ் செவிய = செக்க சிவந்த
கஞ்சம் நிகர் = தாமரை மலருக்கு நிகரான
சீறடியள் ஆகி = சிறிய அடி. சிறப்பான அடி. மெல்ல மெல்ல அடி எடுத்து வந்ததால்

அம் சொல் இள மஞ்ஞை என = இனிமையாக அகவும் மயில் போல
அன்னம் என = மென்மையான அன்னம் போல
மின்னும் வஞ்சி என = மின்னும் வஞ்சிக் கொடி போல
நஞ்சம் என = விஷம் போல
வஞ்ச மகள் வந்தாள் = வஞ்சனையாக அந்தப் பெண் வந்தாள்
பஞ்சு போன்ற மென்மை. இளந்தளிரின் வெதுவெதுப்பான அந்த ஈரம். மயில் போல சாயல்.
தாமரை மலர் போல சிவப்பு. அன்னம் போன்ற தூய்மை. இத்தனையும் இருக்கிறது. ஆனால்,
நிஜம் இல்லை. வஞ்ச மகள் வந்தாள்.

The panchi is bright fibre
the cool sprouting just in a plant is Pallava
is anunga, means regretting
The red-colored, ganja is LOTUS like a swindler, she has become a swindler,
That SOUND OF WALK, is like SOUND FROM A PEA-COCK TREADING, manja,
like an annam, SWAN LIKE WALK
it is shining AND SWAYING LIKE A CREEPER As a vanji,
like a poison, NANJUI the deceitful daughter has come.
Surpanaka's feet are walking and walking and regretting
Do you know how thin those feet are?
Panchi = like cotton
Lighter than the cool Pallava Anunga = Pallava If so [sprout.] Anunga means
regret.
The cold shoots are regretting. The soft feet are more than the cool,
light-reflecting shoots
Senj seviya = red
Ganjam nikar = like a lotus flower
Siratiyal aagi = small steps. Excellent steps. Since he was taking his
steps slowly, the steps were small
Am sol ila manjnai ena = sweetly like a peacock
Annam ena = like a soft swan
Minnum vanji ena = like a shimmering vanji flag
Nanjam ena = like poison
Vanja makal vandal = that woman came deceitfully
Softness like cotton. That warm moisture of the spring. Hue like a peacock.
Red like a lotus flower. Purity like a swan. All this is there. But, it is
not real. The deceitful daughter came.

3 AND HAD TO COMPETE WITH SEETHA WHOSE BEAUTY IS MAHALAKSHMI.
4 WORDS “NJA” ROLLED OVER WHERE READER WILL BE SO ATTRACTED EVEN TO
SURPANAKA AS A COMPETITOR.
