Willie and Julia were worried about where Barnabas had gone. When she asked
him if Barnabas had said anything to him about going on a trip, he shook his
head. He told her that he did not know that he had left until he got back to
the Old House and had found the note.
Julia picked up her purse and keys. When Willie asked her where she was
going, she told him that she was going to drive toward Collinsport to see if
she
could find him. When he asked her what he should do, she told him to go to
Collinwood.
At Collinwood, Carolyn was on her way out the door when she met Willie.
"I didn't know you were coming."
"Have you seen Barnabas?"
"No, not for a couple days. Is there something wrong?"
"I don't know. I got back from an errand and he was gone."
"Mother is in the drawing room. Do you want to ask her?"
She walked toward the drawing room with him following her. Elizabeth
Stoddard looked up to see her daughter and Willie standing in front of her.
"Mrs. Stoddard, you haven't seen Barnabas today have you?"
"No, he hasn't been here. Is something wrong?"
"We don't know. He isn't at the Old House anywhere."
Willie sadly walked back to the Old House. He changed the direction he was
walking and went to the Eagle Hill Cemetary. He searched it and went into the
maoseleum. When he opened the door to the secret room and found that it was
empty, he went back to the Old House.
Julia was on her way back to the Old House and found herself missing
Barnabas. She didn't know what she would do if he did not return. When she
walked
into the Old House, Willie was sitting in the chair with a cigarette. She saw
the pained expression on his face. She didn't think that he heard her come
back. She walked over to the chair and placed her hand on his shoulder. He
jumped. When she asked him if he had gone to Collinwood, he told her he did.
He
added that he also went to the cemetary and the maoseleum. He told her that he
had not been there. She told him that she had not been able to find him
either.
