Willie ran the errand that Julia asked him to. On the way, he was dreading
going. He was afraid that when he got there, he would find that it was
Barnabas. Then, he was dreading having to go to Collinwood to break the news
to
Julia. He was never told anything about how Julia felt about Barnabas, but he
had
an idea that there was something between them. When Willie got to Widow's
Hill and searched where Julia had asked him to, he didn't find anything so he
went to Collinwood. When she asked him if he had found anything, he told her
that he hadn't found anything there.
Julia went into the drawing room and Willie went back to the Old House. On
his way, he began thinking about the errand that Julia had sent him on. He was
afraid that Barnabas had been at the bottom of Widow's Hill and that the
tide had carried him out to sea. He wondered what would happen to the Old
House
if Barnabas was gone for good. He was worried about Julia. He was positive
that the reason Julia moved to the Old House was that the Old House made her
think about Barnabas.
Willie was nervous staying at the Old House by himself. He was hearing every
sound. He was thinking about going to the Collinsport Inn to stay, but he
changed his mind. He was afraid Barnabas would return and there would be no
one
at the Old House to welcome him home.
The sheriff's deputies were still searching the grounds around the Old House
and the woods, but they still didn't find any sign of Barnabas. The deputies
couldn't understand why it was so hard to find him. It was like Barnabas
disappeared off of the face of the earth.
Carolyn was worried about her mother. She knew that the only reason the
sheriff had not called off the search was that her mother insisted.
