Willie was getting worried. There still wasn't any sign of Barnabas. He was
thinking about going to the sheriff, but he was afraid to go into Collinsport
to tell the sheriff that Barnabas was missing from the Old House and leave
Julia alone at the Old House. He knew how upset she was about Barnabas.
Willie wondered if there was more to Julia and Barnabas' relationship than
what they had let on. He remembered a couple days after Barnabas had
disappeared. He returned to the Old House after running errands and found her
sitting
in the chair crying. He waited until Julia ventured out of the Old House and
walked to Collinwood, before he got in the car, drove into Collinsport and
talked to the sheriff.
At Collinwood, Elizabeth Stoddard was shocked to see Julia. She did not seem
like the same woman who had been at Collinwood. She knew what was bothering
her. She was worried about Barnabas being gone and her not knowing where he
was and when or if he would be coming back. David had found her in the drawing
room and asked her what was wrong. She had told her nephew that Barnabas was
gone and no one seemed to know where he was. He had asked her when he was
going to come back and she told him that she didn't know.
The sheriff had gone back to the Old House with Willie and had looked
through the whole house and the grounds, but he didn't find any sign of
Barnabas.
As the sheriff had searched the Old House, he had found one thing he had left
behind. The cane with the silver wolf's head, that he never went anywhere
without, still leaned against the wall where it always stood.
