The Skull Upon The Hearth
By Donamarie

Part 01

My name is Maverick..and this is my story.

Uncle Roscoe left for Europe, six months ago, and at that point in time, I
inherited his old mansion.

It was built in 1803

***

The year, is 1900..the month, late October. It's just one week before the
season of Halloween.

The place, a small new England town, near Salem, Massachusetts.

It is a peculiar estate..said by my uncle (and the town) to be haunted.
But I never believed in such folly - such humbug!

Though, the house does posses a certain oddity. A human skull sits upon the
hearth by the fireplace as you enter the magnificent drawing room

Legend has it, the skull belongs to one Caleb Kent.

He owned the estate in 1803. He was very well to do - inheriting millions of
dollars from his wealthy family upon their demise.

Legend also states, that he feared for his fortune..and indeed, his very life.

Many men befriended him, but there were thieves among them.

He notarized his will, stating if he were to suddenly die because of foul
play..that his skull was to be placed on the floor of the hearth.

In full view, and for all to see..the skull was to forever remain at the hearth
- untouched and not removed from its resting place.

Its eyes had to witness. Its eyes had to see.

Rumor has it, he was alone in this house, one night in winter; when the snows
were deep, and your body would surely freeze to death if you ventured out into
the village by foot.

No one witnessed what happened that fateful night. But in the mornings
light..his son and daughter-in-law found him dead - dead upon the hearth by the
stone cold fireplace. Stiff and cold as the grave, he was.

He was but forty-six years old. He had been beaten with a poker from the
fireplace.

The great house was in ruins, as the thieves and murderers searched for the
man's money.

Legend says it was never found. More's the pity..his secret had died with him
that cold, winters night.

There is more. They say the man's ghost walks each year at Halloween.

He checks to see that his money is safe..and finding it thus, he departs to
find the ghosts who tried to steal his fortune..and then murdered him in cold
blood.

To be continued...
