There is also possibility to work only with the smaller part of the cave - not entire system at all. It should be fast enough.
You can also have more xtherions open :) - when you need to switch from one to another .th2 file. I usually do - when searching for some join errors. But my experience is the same: PDF rendering is the most time consuming part of the process. Especially - when you need bigger maps. Acroread does not have "reload" feature - therefore it is almost unusable. I am usually using ghostscript or xpdf, but both of them are slow when rendering bigger maps. We have tried SVG also - but those renderers are even much slower. Therefore we have decided to do rendering of some limited 2D maps also in OpenGL. When it is hardware accelerated - it is real fun - even there are only labels and filled outlines. S.
