I think this is ridiculous. I don't mind stories being told about the characters using the "classic" trappings (i.e. Lois, Daily Planet, Jimmy Olsen, Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, etc), but to go out of your way to create a new independent continuity is silly.
This smacks of Marvel's Ultimate universe, which DC tried once already with their "DC All Star" titles. Are those going away? More than likely.
I've always felt the clock is ticking on the Ultimate Universe anyway. It's just a matter of time until all the series are canceled and it becomes a memory (i.e. Marvel's New Universe, Marvel's M2, Marvel's 2009, etc).
Two things are worth noting about this initiative:
1) The graphic novel format rather than monthly comics. This is a HUGE change for DC. Maybe they see the future coming and are trying to make a new model work for them. Good idea to try this now.
2) Given that Johns and MJS are writing the stories, they will probably be good. I'm just not getting sucked into a separate continuity. It also means that the Superman monthly comics might go to crap without Johns involvement.
