I think if you took a poll, waaaay more people would prefer Amy to River. She doesn't have to regenerate, per se, since the 'next' time she meets the Doc (for him) will actually be the first time (for her), that means she will be younger. Perfect opportunity to replace her with, to use Shag's term, someone not FoA.
So, it's too obvious that the 'greatest man she ever met' that she killed is the Doc, right?
