Apparently, BBC America made a better offer than SyFy to get the US rebroadcast rights for Doctor Who. Although what the details of that transaction are I don't know. I imagine that BBC would rather have BBC America air the show than SyFy considering that SyFy's edits gain pretty universal hate.
Also, you know that SyFy doesn't actually produce the "SyFy Original Movies," right? They get them super cheap for broadcast from outfits like Nu Image. The name comes from them having exclusive broadcast rights. At one point a few years ago they were advertising Dog Soldiers, the best werewolf movie since The Howling, as a "Sci-Fi Original Movie," which got a lot of fanboys really hot as Dog Soldiers is held in pretty high regard. There must be some revenue in the cheapie creature features... Nu Image and such keeps making them and SyFy keeps buying them!
