Don't take my word on this as I have no experience with DirectTV, but I
think it was due to the kind of DirectTV hardware you had, that it allowed
recording whereas today if you got DirectTV with one of the newer boxes I
don't think you can record. I don't believe it's a DirectTV versus AT&T
issue.
I know for a fact they did that with the TiVo boxes. Some of the early
hardware you could transfer the actual recorded files from the TiVo box to
a different hard drive but in later models they discontinued this. Because
of this change, there have even been books and devoted websites on how to
hack the TiVo for this functionality.
So, it is more like a blame on the hardware and not the service itself.
Either way, DRM SUCKS!
