Oh, I don't think Microsoft will *die*, but they are on the precipice of becoming irrelevant. You can't live off of legacy products forever, but Win8 could really cost them. Their saving factor is business; there simply isn't a viable option for the legions of businesses out there. OSX is too focused on consumer use, and Linux doesn't have the breadth of software (and would require a heck of a lot of IT support and training for end users). That being said, Win8 seems like a horrid choice for business, too. If you're going to have umpteen different versions of your OS, why can't they have a pared-down Metro-free business client? Answering my own question- they kinda do, it's called Win7.
