Astute observations. I've loved using OSX, and I ain't going back. Ubuntu was
fun to play with, and offered some functionality XP couldn't (much easier to
rip DVDs) but did require a lot more work to get it where I wanted it. A lot of
commenters on the Fark thread about this have echoed Ed's endorsement of Mint.
There's a second worry out there for Windows users- the push for Microsoft to
completely copy the Apple business model. That means locked down bootloader
(even though Bootcamp allows you around this) AND no unapproved sources of
software. They covet Apple's 30% take on sales of software and media, and the
gold rush days of consumers beating down the doors to buy the latest hardware
won't last forever. There's an entirely new revenue stream just waiting to be
plundered, and there's no way MS is going to let competitors enjoy it without
them. Currently Apple is the only one offering it for non-mobile devices, but
I'd wager someone like Amazon would love to create a 'trusted' download-only
software store that could include updates and the ability to redownload when
needed.
