I'm a big fan of Apple's product line and services, but they are renowned for forcing their customer base into new tech (no floppy drive, all laptops having webcams, relying only on the App store for iOS devices, having to use iTunes to interface with iOS devices, newer PCs not having optical drives, the list goes on). Usually it's a good move for the consumer, and they tend to make the transition pretty painless. Microsoft doesn't have this track record; if anything most of their fans tout the freedom they feel as opposed to Apple's setup. Couple this with clumsy implementation and questionable value and you have another boneheaded move by the guys in Redmond. I understand they want to push the now unnamed screen that used to be Metro, but I can't see much if any value in not allowing users to boot to a more traditional desktop environment to ease the switch. So what if the experience isn't exactly the same across all devices? Tablets and mobile devices offer a significantly different interface- the experience SHOULD be different. Apple has been pushing touch input for a while on their PCs, but it's been subtle: they introduced their gesture control mouse and bluetooth trackpad a while before multitouch gestures were really brought into play. Microsoft is going the other way around; forcing users into a startup screen that isn't designed for mouse/keyboard and including a mouse trackpad on the keyboard of their tablet where touch should be emphasized.
