You mean like Dollhouse did? Fox gave that show WAY longer than it deserved considering it's exceptionally low ratings. I love this attitude that Fox cancels genre shows too soon. You realize that TV networks cancel shows when they are no longer profitable, right? When your programming literally drives away viewers, you can't keep ordering new episodes, folks.
They did the same thing with Sarah Conner Chronicles, which started off strong and then free-fell in the ratings but still got brought back for another season; similarly, Human Target, (which I enjoyed) was a ratings bomb which was carried over for a second season. And then of course there is Fringe, which has been airing on the network since 2008. The plug was pulled early on Firefly because it was a train wreck ratings-wise. It could not compete, and the show itself was was expensive, hence, it got the axe. If the show had been pulling the kind of ratings which Buffy or Angel pulled, it would have survived. If the show had been on basic cable (read: Sci-Fi), it would have survived. But it wasn't and it didn't.
