I think of it as my brain's portable memory enhancement module.  

Example:  I tack down a note for the size of my car tires before going into 
the tire store.  Now I look like less of an idiot when the dude asks what 
size tires I need.

Any little bit of info that I know I'll forget but need to retain and have 
centralized access to.  My Delta SkyMiles number is in there somewhere too, 
for example.
