I can't believe I'm the first one to get in the linux recommendation! Download a live-cd iso of either bodhi linux or puppy linux. That way you can do a test drive without having to wipe your system. I have found that both of those flavors of linux have resurrected a *700 mhz* fossil to actual peppy speeds and audacity runs fine on them.
Just a cheap thought on how to maintain productivity on the cheap.
