Hey Luke - Not sure if you are still looking for a Star Trek book for your wife, but I highly recommend the 1987 novel STRANGERS FROM THE SKY. I just finished re-reading it myself. I think it would be great for someone looking for classic Trek printed fiction. It takes place in two eras of Trek: the Movie era (between The Motion Picture & Wrath of Khan) and The Original Series era (prior to Where No Man Has Gone Before). There are some contradictions to First Contact, but it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the story.
Give it a try!
