I've no idea - although I know that all sources for a single index  
need to have the same fields and attributes for Sphinx to work  
reliably. Could be worth asking this question on the Sphinx forum  
instead.

If there's speed benefits, quite possibly. I'm not quite sure what's  
prompted you to want to do this, though. In what way does the current  
global search not fit what you need?
