Ah, this was my fault, kinda. Thinking Sphinx requests a version of ActiveRecord greater than or equal to 1.15.6 (which was Rails 1.2.6) - and now that Rails 3 has been released, things got confusing.
Rails 1.3.20 fixes this (as does the corresponding release of AfterCommit). Give it a spin, hopefully everything's fine now.
