Well, at least it's working now - but I agree, it's frustrating.

I guess the first piece of advice (for anyone coming across this thread with 
the same issue): stop Sphinx, delete all the index files 
(db/sphinx/development), then run 'rake ts:rebuild' and see if that helps.
