You don't need to worry about the files in /usr/local/etc - they're just 
example files, Thinking Sphinx generates Sphinx config files in your app's 
config directory.

What version of Thinking Sphinx are you using? The latest releases work with 
Sphinx 2.0.2, and it looks like your Sphinx installation is in a standard 
location (and thus in the PATH for your user).
