I tried another install on Ubuntu, and the output at the command line is...
ubuntu@domU-12-31-39-07-38-86:~/hls$ which searchd /usr/bin/searchd ubuntu@domU-12-31-39-07-38-86:~/hls$ searchd Sphinx 0.9.8.1-release (r1533) Copyright (c) 2001-2008, Andrew Aksyonoff FATAL: no readable config file (looked in /etc/sphinxsearch/ sphinx.conf, ./sphinx.conf). ...so according to this I am using Sphinx 0.9.8.1-release (r1533). I am a little confused on installing from source vs. just installing from the repo and gems. On this particular setup I did `sudo apt-get install sphinxsearch` and then installed the thinking-sphinx gem (v 1.3.16). Should this be sufficient for thinking [and thinking sphinx] to be installed and configured? The install page here... http://freelancing-god.github.com/ts/en/installing_sphinx.html ...does not mention the gem and makes it sound like if u are using unix that u must install from source.
