I just bought a "scratch and dent" battery for my son's T42 from Lenovo's online outlet shop. It was only $40 and they had a free shipping offer (though not for me, only for mainland people). It seemed little used if at all, and holds a full charge. The behavior you're experiencing could also be a problem with your power settings.
