I would try to access the drive from a 2nd HDD tray in the ultrabay (they're available for SATA as far as I remember) or alternatively get a SATA adapter to connect the 2.5" drive to a desktop pc. The access via USB is rarely working in these scenarios.
For the actual data rescue, I can recommend http://www.r-studio.com/ I have gained access to some systems with that where most other ways failed.
