Why don't you run the diagnostics on the bootable CD you can create in Lenovo System ToolBox (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67520)? Or, if it's not compatible with your TP40, the similar diagnostics found in PC Doctor (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-56222)? If yours is a hardware problem, you may find out about it (by running the diagnostics on one of the above bootable CD) even if your Windows install is screwed up.
