A bad modem can cause a BSOD. Remove it and see what happens.

Why don't you run the diagnostics on the bootable CD you can create in
Lenovo System ToolBox
(http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67520)?

Or, if it's not compatible with your TP40, the similar diagnostics found in
PC Doctor
(http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-56222)?

If yours is a hardware problem, you may find out about it (by running the
diagnostics on one of the above bootable CD) even if your Windows install is
screwed up.

Cheers, Dominique

I created the CD and ran the tests overnight. I'm confused about the log
though - when I used F2, F3 to save the log the only entries were regarding
the modem, which supposedly failed. Nothing about the 12+ hours of system
tests. I also don't fing the log file on the hard drive - there's no
indicaton of where PC Doc placed it. So ... perhaps it detected problems,
but if so it gave no clear indication of what passed and what did not. And
the log file is nowhere to be found. I'm may be missing something obvious.

I ran two spyware checks: Spybot, which complained about browser cookies,
and the free Google download Spyware Doctor, which flagged more cookies and
a few registry entries. Spyware doctor seems hyperactive tho; it seems to
flag anything related to advertising. I can understand why many people avoid
all versions of Windows.

I'm guessing I have an infrequent issue with hardware (based on seeing IRQL
NOT LESS OR EQUAL, which I've seen with hardware issues in other cases) and
perhaps some bit of software that's able to crash more than its own
processes. I truly despise unreliable computers, so I will put a few more
hours into rooting this out. Unfortunately neither PCs nor Windows were
designed to be highly reliable, so there's a shoveling sand aspect to this
pursuit.
