Why don't you run the diagnostics on the bootable CD you can create in Lenovo
System ToolBox
(http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67520)?

Or, if it's not compatible with your TP40, the similar diagnostics found in PC
Doctor
(http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-56222)?

If yours is a hardware problem, you may find out about it (by running the
diagnostics on one of the above bootable CD) even if your Windows install is
screwed up.

Cheers, Dominique

A bad modem can cause a BSOD. Remove it and see what happens.

They don't really conflict in my experience, but they do slow each other
down in significant ways.

Spyware Doctor paid version has been one of the top three AntiSpyware for at
least four years... along with Spy Sweeper... there is a lot of fluctuations
of number three...

That is true... even if not connected or used as a modem.

They can do, depending on how extensive the anti-malware component is.

Incidentally, just last week I took Comodo firewall (which I generally like
quite a lot) off one machine (non-ThinkPad) because when I installed XP Service
Pack 3, I started getting BSODs, and after analysis Comodo was the cause.  (it
is now running Online Armor, also an excellent program.)  The reason I switched
to Comodo from ZoneAlarm was that ZA was giving me BSODs on my W2K machines.

Which version of ZA was causing that? Version 8 does not support Win2K.

  2. Re: Troubleshooting BSODs (Aryeh Goretsky (home))

Also depends on whether you are using the free versions of Avira and Spyware
Doctor. The paid versions work much differently. The Avira paid version has
a good version of Spyware on its own, but that may conflict with other
Spyware, as we have seen many times on desktops in our shop.

The free versions do not appear to conflict.

Troubleshooting T40 BSODs, response to several suggestions

1. Lenovo system tools CD was useful, but it's not clear where it leaves its
log, it was not to be found on the HD.
2. I used the free versions of Avira and Spyware Doctor, in addition Spybot has
resident programs running in the background. I will consolidate that to one
suite from one vendor to avoid conflicts -- I'd noted some odd slowdows after
PC Doc, no I understand why.
3. The modem is probably OK - the test which fails looks for a dial tone from a
connected phone line, which is not available. The internal modem tests not
requiring a live phone line pass.
4. I haven't had them for several days. Previously, once they started they
became more frequent until the machine became unusable. It may be something
different this time.
5. It looks like it's not obvious what's up this time but it's closer to being
resolved. The 1st screen flicker sounds suspiciously like the T40 video chip
issue, but running the full PC Doc hardware test suite booted off the CD for
more than 12 hours did not crash the machine and the flicker has not
returned.... yet.
Z.  How much would a spare used machine good enough for email, web,
downloanding + xfering files to a T series while troubleshooting and playing
occasional DVDs run? Preferable something smaller than a T. I crisp screen
like my current machine's (hi-res) is the one luxury I'd include.

Thanks to all for help with this issue. I'd like to call out Bruce
and Ray especially; your pointers have been *very* valuable over several years.

regards

Larry
