Would you care to list those seven model numbers, since I have yet to see a
T43/p with BIOS higher than 1.03 that doesn't generate the error on a "foreign"
drive, unless the drive is Fujitsu?
GPU failures (and subsequent planar replacements) on T40/41/42/p have been the
plague of T4x/R5x series ThinkPads for years now. The problem was resolved to a
degree with a different soldering technique on T43/p and late T42 units, but
even these fail on occasion....
Cheers,
George

Subject: [Thinkpad] T-43 - T42
If you have a loud beep, it can be serious... depending on who is around
when you use it. Anytime a Thinkpad misbehaves, that is serious where we
work... and the ones I sold to Insurance companies stopped them from making
further purchases of Thinkpads... so that is serious...
Not all T-43 units have the problem (only seven type numbers), but the
IBM-approved hard drives are no longer available, and a 40 GB Hitachi is not
acceptable due to the high failure rate of those crummy travel deathstars..
So far, the new Fujitsu hard drives do not result in the error on my
machine... but I have only tried three of them.
I have yet to see a GPS failure in a T-42, and we service a great number of
them for sales teams and such.
